Shortly after dawn on December 2 four men will set out to row across the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean on a fibreglass boat measuring no more than 30ft long and six foot wide.
The crew of Endeavour will face mountainous seas, tropical storms and sweltering heat as they attempt to row the 3,000 miles from the Canary Isles to Antigua. That would be a challenge for anyone, but for two of crew the crossing will be particularly tough. Scott Blaney lost much of his right leg after being blown up by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) while serving as a sharpshooter Afghanistan in 2007.
Cayle Royce stepped on an IED in May last year while on patrol with the Light Dragoons in Helmand province. In the resulting explosion he lost both his legs above the knee and the fingers of his left hand.
Their injuries and subsequent disability could have been enough to sap the will of many men. But now, after months of painful rehabilitation and physiotherapy, Corporal Blaney and Trooper Royce, both 27, are about to embark on the biggest challenge of their lives.

There are other ways to prove you are still alive. Like going camping with your family, or sharing the next sunset or birthday. Just giving great hugs to the loved ones would mean more to them. Why would you inflict more stress on the people who love you and care about your well-being? The loved ones are probably already stressed to the limit. I suppose this is “noble” because they are injured soldiers. I’d rather see them storm the Barrycades in DC with wire cutters. That would be an act of love for your family and your country. Rowing off into the Atlantic in a boat to prove you can live through it, when death is the alternative, is suicidally selfish, family-wise. IMHO.
