Word For The Day, Thursday, Rocktober 10, 2013 – corrigendum
dictionaries ad nauseam | 10 October 2013 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

corrigendum \kor-uh-JEN-dum\ noun
an error in a printed work discovered after printing and shown with its correction on a separate sheet

Example sentences:
The day after running the article, the newspaper printed a corrigendum stating that the actress had been born in 1971, not 1871 as indicated.

"In summary, the scientific literature is self-correcting through corrigenda and through reader comments. Corrections of various kinds appear at the rate of one to two per hundred journal articles, compared to which the rate of forced retractions is negligible."
— From an article by Joseph F. Grcar in American Scientist, Jan.-Feb. 2013

Etymology:
If you guessed that "corrigendum" might be connected to the word "correct," you are quite right. Both "corrigendum" and "correct" derive from the Latin verb "corrigere," which means "to correct." The noun "corrigendum" and its plural "corrigenda" came to us unaltered from Latin in the early 19th century. The verb "correct" is much older; it has been part of our language since at least the 14th century.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Gun grabbers need a corrigendum
They say killings decrease if you end ‘em
But on the Second Amendment
We all are dependent
It’s the law; we don’t need referendum

If all of the corrigendum
Contained in all the pages
Of the unread Obamacare bill
Were corrected by the sages

Gathered from the think tanks
And mountaintops in the East
The resulting storm of paper
Would only add to the beast

That can’t be comprehended
And needs a fortune to exist-
People now have seen the cost
And they are really pissed...

I was making coffee at dawn, and the cats were racing around the kitchen, with Husky girl following after. They were happily taking turns torturing a small mouse that had managed to make it past the door. Yeti boy shook it and put an end to the game when I started putting food in their bowls-they never show any interest in eating what they kill.
