Ever since this update was downloaded and installed, it locks up many times a day. I have done the Repair deal, and taken all of the optional stuff off Firefox, but the lockups continue.
Boo. Hiss.
I agree, but I’ve kept taking the updates in spite of that. Sheesh on me.

It may be due to latency. The big sites cache content at different places around the world to reduce perceived download times.
There may not be enough users in your location to trigger the content to preload at the cache site. So when you load the site it has to go back to the US servers, download content, download ads, send a note to the NSA, and then serve the content to your browser.
Installed and rebooted Waterfox. Same crashes on same sites as before but it did load up other pages much quicker than Firefox
Try running Spybot Search & Destroy and then add Ghostery as an extension. Ghostery will block all sorts of internal ads and tracking bots in web pages. Turn everything on and then turn off the things you want to get through. Very clean. You might also check out FasterFox.

As do mine. I have a single processor machine and I keep cleaning and deleting cookies, so I suspect advertising spyware is installing and starting to run, via script, when I click on these sites. Maybe I'll try NoScript, or just get over US media sites, there is nothing on 'em anyway.
Interestingly, I have noticed no problem on the few times someone has linked the "printer friendly" or print page directly, bypassing the article page.

I had that problem and solved it by disabling all the addons. I re-enabled them one at a time until the lockup occurred. I uninstalled the two causing the problem and now FF is again flying. The addons are the reason I like FF so much.
Works great in Linux!
I got rid of it when it conflicted with my Dell Touchpad. No judgments. Just practicality. As a positive byproduct, Chrome syncs across all of my devices.
SeaMonkey! Works great for me, and, I can run it off of my flash drive. Thus I have my favorites with me everywhere I go. (FF derivative)
You may also want to try ‘Iron’ Open source version of Chrome. A little less “Google”y. Works off of Thumbdrive.
Opera..quite like it. Use it mostly on my android. Works off of Thumbdrive.
IE 10 is swift and works very well on my Win 7 systems.

Netscape 1.22 for instance

Not always available. Older versions usually get scrubbed from the download site each time a new version is made available.
