Word For The Day, Thursday, May 2, 2013 – aleatory

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

desideratum; noun plural de·sid·er·a·ta [dih-sid-uh-rey-tuh, -rah-, -zid-] something wanted or needed. Etymology: desideratum (1650s), from L., lit. "something for which desire is felt," from pp. stem of desiderare "to long for" (see desire).

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Rise and shine! We can have fun with this word and some >> portmanteaux of our own. >> >> Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!

Here is my example with >> WFTD.

Lindsay Graham does not get it that defunding/delaying Obamacare is the desideratum.

The National Knights of Columbus officials were at noon Mass at Holy Rosary yesterday. Because of the shutdown, they cannot have their annual ceremony at Columbus Circle, at the statue in front of Union Station. Holy Rosary, being Italian, has a statue of Columbus in the side garden, donated by the Lido club of Washington. So it was interesting yesterday to have the Columbus celebration, that we would otherwise not have seen.

When asked what you want for desideratum,
always pick chocolate.

Speaking of Italians, I watched “the Godfather” on the plane last week. I never had before (it came out when I was 3 years old).

Funny how much of the dialog and situations were so completely familiar because of their iconic status. After seeing a million parodies and homages, it was interesting to imagine seeing it all for the first time.

Also, the new Star Trek was pretty good.

"oh. that was almost before my time... "

Uh-huh.

Anyway, "some >> portmanteaux of our own. >>" leads me to "desideradatum", developing a sexy robot.

Desideratum, why don’t you come to your senses?
You been out ridin’ fences for so long now
Oh, you’re a hard one
I know that you got your reasons
These things that are pleasin’ you
Can hurt you somehow

Don’t you draw the queen of diamonds, boy
She’ll beat you if she’s able
You know the queen of hearts is always your best bet

Now it seems to me, some fine things
Have been laid upon your table
But you only want the ones that you can’t get

Desideratum, oh, you ain’t gettin’ no younger
Your pain and your hunger, they’re drivin’ you home
And freedom, oh freedom well, that’s just some people talkin’
Your prison is walking through this world all alone

Don’t your feet get cold in the winter time?
The sky won’t snow and the sun won’t shine
It’s hard to tell the night time from the day
You’re losin’ all your highs and lows
Ain’t it funny how the feeling goes away?

Desideratum, why don’t you come to your senses?
Come down from your fences, open the gate
It may be rainin’, but there’s a rainbow above you
You better let somebody love you, before it’s too late

Well, I don't know about 'desideratum'.

But I do know that when a pitching coach is talking to a pitcher who is having trouble getting a particular hitter out, the coach almost always says, "Throw deslideratum."

I did not attend work today out of desideratum, but instead out of sheer boredom.

They all had to be upright. She spent a half hour fixing them.

P>Then we checked out the critters. That's my GF Kelly taking a picture (she's under the donkey ride sign)

Then the other critters.

then she got an icecream before her mommy dropped her off at her paternal grandparents for the night.

I just saw a tweet this morning that said “I wish I loved something as much as white people love pumpkin patches.”

Speaking of Italians, I watched “the Godfather” on the plane last week.

My husband was visiting his Sicilian grandmother in NYC when this movie showed on TV for the first time. Naturally it captured a lot of attention in Italian-American homes.

After the movie was over, he asked his grandmother, "Nana, it wasn't really that bad, was it?"

"It was WORSE!" she responded.
