From their study of history, your natives James Madison and Patrick Henry were experts on the theory and practices of republics.

Both cited Montesquieu when it came to how a nation that expected to span a continent could be ruled other than by coercion from a small, centralized, consolidated government.

The answer was to create a federated republic, IOW a republic composed of republics.

Henry assumed consolidated tyranny in the near term. Madison denied that could happen as long as there was a senate of the states.
