KitKat ships with Google’s Quickoffice

With Android 4.4 KitKat, Google’s biggest blow to Microsoft isn’t against Windows Phone. It’s against Microsoft Office. You see, KitKat ships with Quickoffice, letting you edit Microsoft Office documents, spreadsheets, and presentations on the go, without paying a dime, straight out of the box.

This tidbit was largely lost in the news yesterday, given the large number of improvements and new features that KitKat offers. Yet it’s a very big deal: every Android user that upgrades to KitKat will get Google’s Quickoffice, and every new Android device (starting with the Nexus 5) that ships with KitKat or higher will get access to Quickoffice.

Seems as if more and more people are realizing that simply because something is put out bearing the MS logo does not mean that it is the be-all and end-all of answers. Whether it be IE, HotMail, or the wince-producing attempt: "Bob", sooner or later it must be realized that quality and reliability are worth more than greater and greater bloatware. Millions of Linux users can not be the only ones who understand this.

So I paid for QuickOffice on my Google Nexus 7 just over a year ago and right after Google acquired QuickOffice.

Do I get a refund now? Or is that $20 bucks down the crapper??

Pretty sure it's like when you purchase a new game disk. Even if you wind up hating the bloody thing and want to return it, it says right on the package that once you open the box (or optical disk sleeve) you can not get a refund for it.

Just be thankful Ms corp does not sell cars. *grin*

You may get a free upgrade. See what the play store says.

It’s a question of whether I hand it to them or make them work a tiny bit for it.

Hmmm. I would wait and see what the developers at OpenOffice and LibreOffice have to offer. Or perhaps StarOffice, if it is still being worked on.

Those of us who do fairly complex/heavily formatted work won’t get satisfactory results from Open/QuickOffice. Everything except the database should be fine for casual work. You know, 18 years after Win95 and the formatting/complex bibliography/search capability of Microsoft Word STILL isn’t up to WordPerfect 5.1.

Never had to go that far in the tasks I was assigned. I do remember however using WordPerfect 5.0 after Lotus123, and pretty much have the same opinion of the MsOfficeware. I still remember having to use some program’s spreadsheet/presentation feature as an impromptu schematic drawing program one wild weekend when we were under the gun to finish a project on schedule. Started with a “P”, I think, but all the documentation and links were done with the WordPerfect program. Amazing what you can accomplish with some quality productive software.

That was WordPerfect Presentations, which was part of the WordPerfect Library/Office, which was poorly positioned by Novell. Yes, Presentations was a nice package, though it sometimes crashed. WP Office also included an Adobe Acrobat type program called Envoy, which was great, for the time.
