When did they add THIS to the oath???

“I will obey the orders of the president of the United States.”

I enlisted in 71 and I’m pretty damn sure that wasn’t part of the oath I took.

Sounds like a self serving Obama edit....

"I will obey the orders of the president of the United States."

Agreed!

It’s the National Guard.

NOT the Praetorian Guard.

I was curious about that too - according to this it's been that way since 1962. Hmm...

It’s been there for a long time. It comes after the statement on the Constitution.

I know we don’t consider Wikipedia as a reliable source, but there are two oaths.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Uniformed_Services_Oath_of_Office

One for active duty

I, [name], do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God

And one for the National Guard

I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States and the State of (STATE NAME) against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the Governor of (STATE NAME) and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to law and regulations. So help me God.

Here’s the Oath of enlistment:

§ 502. Enlistment oath: who may administer

(a) Enlistment Oath.— Each person enlisting in an armed force shall take the following oath:
“I, XXXXXXXXXX, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.”
(b) Who May Administer.— The oath may be taken before the President, the Vice-President, the Secretary of Defense, any commissioned officer, or any other person designated under regulations prescribed by the Secretary of Defense.
