I was in the third grade as the principal walked in to whisper something in the teacher's ear. The teacher gasped and sat down as the principal told us children in just a couple of sentences what had happened.

At home, it was non-stop TV coverage for many days.

It was 3:30 pm. Our high school gym coach called us into formation and announced “The President has been shot and seriously wounded”. But then his assistant called out from across the gym, “The President is dead!”

Someone asked, “Does this mean war with the Russians?”

In the hallway, girls were crying. When I got home, LBJ had already been sworn in, and TV coverage was nonstop for the next four days.

I would learn why the riderless horse following the casket had boots reversed in the stirrups.
