In the corporate "tolerance" film I watched (at Ernst & Young) a member of a protected class could not easily be fired - there would have to be a dossier constructed and all sorts of legal hoops to jump through to prevent civil lawsuits or government scrutiny.
The film explicitly stated that a heterosexual, Christian, white male was not protected and could be fired easily and with no legal complications.
That what I understand protected class to mean. I don't know anybody else's definition.
“Protected class” is a legal term. A defined-by-law group that receives special protection or treatment. The key is “defined by law”. Merely being a minority of some sort or other is not the same as being part of a protected class.

One couple are really very secular and might attend Temple once or twice a year but are registered Republicans.

The other couple belong to a Conservative Temple (like Joe Lieberman) but both are sold out on liberal political policies, yet live their lives like conservative Christians!
