I'd say it's simply a predictable cycle of human culture. The concept of consistent, lasting liberty is as much a utopian fallacy as the collectivist "getting it right this time" ideal of Communism.

We're living in crunch time, which is painful. However, that's when fortunes are made, so at least there's a potential upside if you aren't one of those who end up in a pit or under a mechanized tread.
