Dog rescue holding fundraiser for disabled veteran whose dog was injured in a hit-and-run

MESA, AZ - He served his country in Vietnam and now the community is serving him. A Mesa man says his dog is recovering from a hit-and-run last month. Now, a Valley non-profit is stepping in to help.

Stone put together a fundraiser online and Sonny ended up at Dobson Ranch, the only hospital they found that would take payments instead of all the cash up front.

"He's a disabled vet and he's done so much for the country already,” said Stone. “And then to see his dog suffering like that since Thanksgiving, he deserved a second chance."

A chance he doesn't take for granted. An emotional situation for Russo who rescued the dog two years ago.

As of Friday, the fundraiser had brought in more than $1,250 to pay the vet for the surgery, but there could be more costs if there are more surgeries.

If you’d like to donate, you can go to the YouCaring.com website . On Saturday, $5,227 had been raised, according to YouCaring.com's website.

Is it still active? Maybe I am missing something but I don’t see it in search results. I’d like to contribute something.

The article is recent so it must be active — I went to the site they mentioned

http://www.youcaring.com/

Searched under the name Frank Russo, the dog’s name, but couldn’t find anything either.

Persistence paid off — I started browsing all pet donation requests and found it!

Sonny, a 3yr old lab needs surgery after being hit by a car.

It also had this info:

Alternatively, you can also call donations in directly to Dobson Ranch Animal Hospital at (480) 838-2503. Let them know your donation is for “Sonny!”

Been doing okay. Staying busy taking care of Hubby. Not much time for freeping these days, but we have plenty of time together. He refuses to do therapy anymore, so his speech is getting worse and he spends almost all his time in the wheelchair. I get him out of the house as often as possible. We’ve been going to bluegrass/gospel jam sessions lately, which he really enjoys. We go to gun shows about once a month. It’s my way of tricking him into being active and sociable. LOL.

How have you been? I hope you’re well.
