Given what I’ve seen on the internet, a fair percentage will fail.

I took the C A B but then again I was also taught well. I will admit that I have to stop and think about affect and effect but the triple ‘2’s has never bothered me. I am afraid that that is not the case with modern education, sigh!

I was once challenged to write correctly the following spoken sentence;

“There are three ‘tus’ in English”

I gave it some thought and wrote;

” There are two ‘tos’ in English. There’s another one too.”

I got full credit.

As a bonus, they should have included the word “tew”, which means to soften leather by beating it.

Which reminds me of the joke of the little boy who had been reading Robin Hood, and was puzzled.

“Teacher,” he asked, “what was Robin Hood’s ‘leather’?”

Not understanding, the teacher asked the boy to read the sentence.

“Robin Hood tore his leather jerkin off”, said the boy.

There’s also a word “tew” which means to work leather and its pretty close to the sound of “to” so maybe there are four of them.

My peeves:

“Height” ends with a “T” sound...not “th”.

It is “Lightning” not “Lightening”.

“Asked” ends with a “D” sound. “Asks” ends with an “S” sound. Neither ends with a “K” sound. I am not talking about the “axe” mispronunciation. That is another topic.

“Noone” is not the contraction for no one. There is no contraction for “no one”.

There is no “d” when you spell “refrigerator”.

Please do not pronounce “ancient” with a “k” sound in the middle.

Opportunity, not oppurtunity.

Sherbet is not pronounced Sherbert.

Told is not pronounced Toad.
