From an upfront/opportunity costs perspective, yes.

I've been using CFLs for years now. Not because of any "green" benefit (note: back in college I liked to annoy Liberals by spraying econo-sized AquaNet out my dorm window while playing Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA" in the background), but because I really, seriously, hate having to change lightbulbs and the longer duration lives appeal to me.

From my own observation, probably 90% exceed their estimated life-spans. Particularly the newer ones. But I have a few that I picked up for free during a trial period back in 1994 or 1995 that are still going strong, and after five different apartment/house moves.
