Inside a building, you are pretty much always by definition at close range.
One word: hallways.
Never mind gyms, cafeteria, library... all rather expansive.
I worked in one building that had a one-kilometer hallway. (Not school, but when halls start reaching football-field lengths, rifles are vital for serious security.)
