In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
bluestocking \BLOO-stok-ing\ , noun
1. a woman with considerable scholarly, literary, or intellectual ability or interest.
2. a member of a mid-18th-century London literary circle: Lady Montagu was a celebrated bluestocking.
...if you rolled the whole group into one girl, she would be what Norine said a rich, assured, beautiful bluestocking.
-- Mary McCarthy, The Group, 1963
She reads such deep booksall about facts and figures: she'll be quite a blue-stocking by and by.
-- Elizabeth Gaskell, Wives and Daughters, 1864-1866
Bluestocking originally referred to cheap blue socks worn by men, in contrast to fine white silk stockings. In the mid-1700s, these blue socks became associated with intellectuals who attended salons where female intellectuals were highly valued. Eventually bluestockings came to be a pejorative term for intellectual women, though it started out as a positive or neutral term.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!
Rise and shine!
The bluestocking was a democrat, said no one ever.
Woke up to a snow dump on my precious SUV. I hate this white stuff already. The frozen tundra sucks snow out of the sky daily, where the heck does it all come from? I am counting the days till spring.
Bonus points for using “Michelle Obama,” or “Kathleen Sebelius” and “bluestocking” in the same sentence..
Good Morning !
I was thinking of Gov. Palin too — she is a blue stocking on energy production.
Kathleen Sebelius looked bluestocking the Obamacare shelves.
And she terrifies them, doesn’t she? A+ for you.
A for you too.
Welcome to WFTD, clever one. A for you.
Once thought to be a bluestocking, it turns out that Hillary actually wears pantsuits to coverup her blue veins. Sorry about that vizual.
I’d like to stuff those republican elite bluestockings so far up their collective Washington aspirins ....
Ayn Rand, libertarian bluestocking
Had views, to the libs, which were shocking
They love Hill and Michelle
But with healthcare in Hell
Even Leno and Stewart are mocking
A for you!
I made it too easy for you today. A+!
MO likely considers herself the Pippi Bluestocking of the Children's world ...
(Although she can not only lift a horse, but can also eat like/resembles same ;)
A for you and thank you for not posting a pic. Welcome to WFTD.
You are cruel. blachcchh! my inner eye is stained with the image of blue veined cankles....I need some eggnog to wash them out.
my neighbors are headed to Nashville today, hope it’s warmer down there for their visit.
First wookie as a bluestocking,
An image designed by her staff
Is as ridiculous as it can get-
You just can’t help but laugh
The deepest thought she ever had
Was probably about some dress-
One to show her arms off more
And show her butt off less
She actually went to law school,
But her knowledge wasn’t seen
Once her husband went to DC
And she wanted to be queen...
I’m cold, damp and tired of screwing with that 4 Runner-I’m pretty sure the problem is the starter solenoid, but I can’t find the mechanic guy, and this has progressed beyond a layman’s job...
I didn’t find the path to the park yesterday-I climbed down the slope at the back of the property to the riverbank and walked for a mile or so-just more properties there, and others on the sheer 100+ ft cliff on the opposite side of the river. Lots of livestock and wildlife, but no path, no park-I came back after getting to some rapids with a little dam I didn’t want to cross-I guess I’ll have to ask someone where the park is...
At least the days are getting longer!
We had about an inch over night. No big deal. It will be in the 40s over the weekend.
Underdog Pitt plays MAC champion Bowling Green at 6 in the Little Caesar’s $5 Hot n Ready Bowl.
The BG QB has a chip on his shoulder cause Pitt looked at him coming out of a Harrisburg high school, but did not offer a scholarship. This could get ugly.
We got 6 inches overnight. We didn’t get off so easy. Still light grainy type snow so it’s easier to shovel, but shovel we must.
Who says College sports is getting too commercial.
Y’all are making me colder just talking about snow-it is 52, damp and gloomy here, so it seems colder than it really is...
At least I know what pizza is.
Still trying to figure out what a “Belk” is. ;-)
Aren’t we grateful the photographer was on this side of the room? I notice all of her academic records are locked up too so we’ll never be able to verify just how smart she supposedly is. A+ for you.
It’s 45 now and supposed to be in the 50s all weekend. Sunny with blue skies too!
A+ for you! I just got back from a jog at the park. It never gets old, going through the woods and seeing some friends out with their dogs.
It’s like JCPenney’s. We’re playing Duke in the ChikFilA Bowl. Speaking of chicks, had a broken egg this morning and ran all sorts of interventions.
Thanks .... BTW, do you think that Matt Smith may have just strolled over to the “Christmas Carol” set while filming the 2013 DWCS ??
Yesterday’s walk was nice, even though I didn’t find the park or trails to hike in, or for bikes. I saw lots of tracks-coyotes, deer, raccoon, wild hogs and even a mountain lion-the river is bordered by wooded areas, so plenty of wildlife.
Apparently the guard of choice for goats and other livestock is a donkey or two-I saw a few llamas prancing around, but mostly it was donkeys braying at me from the other side of the fences, pawing the ground and showing teeth. I don’t think any coyote, hog or mountain lion with any sense would attempt to get a meal from a pasture with an unfriendly, kicking, biting donkey in it...
Ruh roh-does it appear to be accidental, or do you suspect an emerging cannibal?
Yeah, I know. I googles it last year. It’s just an example of an oddly named bowl.
So what about that Doctor Who?
I was underwhelmed. It has always been more about the relationships than making sense, but I feel they did ‘t even try. Just “OK let’s break the rules.”
For a while there i thought they would actually let the “final” doctor die. Then they could continue storytellong with a “reboot” of the franchise.
The guy is over a thousand years old. Lots of stories and companions we don’t know about yet.
That would have been bold.
Am I the only one who really disliked the newest DW episode? And we were horrified to see Pond with a shaved head. I hope it’s for a role and not a head lice gone wild incident.
I am hoping accidental but I am trying all the advice to prevent a recurrence.
I really liked the Day of the Doctor even though it took 3 attempts to watch it all the way through without falling asleep, my fault, not theirs, I’m beat lately. But I did not like the new one at all.
Took all day to recover from all that food!
I’ve never been a DW fan, but I did like Matt Smith. The new episode did not appeal-I only watched a bit of it.
The spouse is napping even now.
sg, unless I missed something it wasn't Pond who was shaven. (Smith did look a bit like Scrooge there at times ;)
RE the Special, I guess the fix was in as they had committed to continuing the series with a new face ... the result being a Christmas-y mish-mash with all the usual suspects.
The actress who played Pond was on some of the commercials and “talking head” interviews. She was shaven. I was horrified.
Yes, the show mist go on. But, like the Star Trek movies, they could have started over with a new number 1 doctor.
Would have been bold.
