If I wanted my desktop monitor to have fingerprints smeared all over it by “dragging” items from one spot to another, I’d get an OS like my phone. Personally, I despise smeary prints all over my screen so I will stay with the OS designed for desktops and laptops, thank you.
An Android OS makes sense when there’s no real keyboard or the keyboard is really tiny. Otherwise, it sucks.

I despise smeary prints all over my screen, not to mention dust, etc.
+1
And my mouse is much handier than reaching 2' to the wall where the monitor's mounted.

You can run Droid apps on a PC today. Download BlueStack for Windows and run all the Droid apps you want!
I'll be interested to see how the Droid OS is made to run on bare-metal Intel X86 pc's and server's ...
Always said Droid would be a game-changer if it ran on the desktop. That's the only real serious competition to Microsoft IMO. (I say that as an Ubuntu and Linux Mint fan, btw.)

I like windows 8 on a laptop, but fingerprints are the trade-off. I don’t get touch screen desktops, though.

If they are wanting to run android apps on PCs as standard operating environment why dont they just put a couple android compatible CPUs on the motherboard as slave CPUs and go with it. They have already standardized multiprocessor design, so take it to the next step and just put a couple as slave processors on the MB and rock n roll. All IO functions will be managed by the main processor core.
That would allow them to push PCs into the world of asymmetric multiprocessing which is a steep they have needed to take for a long time.

Always said Droid would be a game-changer if it ran on the desktop.
No game changer at all, since Android is still a very limited capabilities OS, and no competition to any full-blown desktop/PC OS. On a PC, "Droid" will still be doing the same things it can do on a smartphone or a tablet, which means that, it's not even close to being a competitor to Windows or Mac OSes or Linux.
Now, if the PC OEMs are angry at Microsoft, and they carry on with their projects to include Android alongside Windows 8/8.1, then they'll be biting off their noses to spite their faces. If people come to believe that they can have the best of both worlds with a "hybrid" PC that runs Windows and Android "together", then there might end up being a lot fewer tablets sold in the future. A lot of those OEMs are also into selling tablets, and if people decide to go with the hybrids, then it's Microsoft and Intel that end up winning, and the OEMs will end up with fewer tablets sold. If the OEMs were smart, they'd try to make better PCs and sell those, while also trying to make better tablets and selling them too. Two sales is always better than one.

Even retina displays are overkill for most content on the internet and for media consumption. 4k tablets, or even 4k PCs, would be “way” overkill. Rendering very high-resolution photos would be about the only meaningful application right now or in the near future.
However, the iFanatics will eat it up, and Apple will be credited with “innovating” once again, and the stock price will hit new highs, and sales of the 4k devices will be in the multi-millions in the first week. And all of it for nothing more than Apple wanting to create a new sales cycle of their iCrap, which will still not be very capable, other than for media consumption.

..... and no competition to any full-blown desktop/PC OS. It doesn't have to be. That's kind of the point. People are doing more on their smartphones and tablets than on their PC's. Why is that? Likely because they're finding free or very cheap apps that accomplish what they want to accomplish.
When you look at the cost of a smart phone vs a PC, a high-end smartphone costs more than a pc or laptop. It's only when you add the Microsoft operating system license and MS Office software and other software components deemed "must have" on a PC that the cost of a PC goes up dramatically.
Take that same basic PC that costs $600 or less, put the "free" Droid OS on it along with the Droid App Store and I think it'd be a hit. Buy the apps you want/need for pennies on the dollar compared to those for MS Windows and off you go.
Just my opinion of course.
