The downtown, lakefront, and many of the neighborhoods of Chicago are great. I’ve lived in the area for 30 years and prefer it over any other large American city.

The Chicago political establishment has tacitly — and sometimes not so tacitly — supported segregation of the city. So, not very far from the downtown are some pretty dangerous and ugly ghettos. It’s been that way for years.

There are a few integrated neighborhoods. And, of course, they’re pretty dicey for everyone. I have a friend who lives in Rogers Park, an integrated neighborhood bordering Evanston. On the phone with her, I frequently hear police sirens.

It’s hard to believe but per capita Indianaopolis has a higher murder rate than Chicago.

I knew it. I grew up in it. In Chicago, in the city. I loved it. Wonderful place to grow up. Back then. Now I'm not so sure. When I go back to visit, I see that the old neighborhood isn't what it used to be. I grew up riding the bus and the El all the time. Now I would be taking my life in my hands. And it's so hard and so expensive to park downtown anymore. Still, Chicago has a lot going for it, in spite of all the Democrats.

All cities have their bad spots, but compared to Chicago Indy is much nicer imho.

I live S. of it about 25 miles, never felt unsafe anywhere in the city except over by the fairgrounds one night. (I don’t even step foot downtown during the Black Expo though, all bets are off when the sun goes down then I will admit...)

Lots of cities have a higher murder rate than Chicago. There are a lot of murders, but there’s a whole heck of a lot of people.

Have you? I work in the city and that’s a fairly accurate representation of how it looks.

I am not saying the picture is not correct. I am saying I do not like Chicago.

Sorry if you are offended.

Nope, in 2012 Chicago was at 18.5/100k, while Indy was 11.6/100k.

Quite true. It’s also true that nobody would be obsessing about posting threads about every murder in Chicago if the occupant of the White House didn’t use to live there. FReepers have given themselves a tunnel vision view of the city because it fits a narrative.

Chicago is very much like a beautiful woman, who possesses a malignant sociopath personality.

Real nice to look at, but you wouldn't want to live with her.
