Yay, yay, yay!!!!! School is closed today!!!!
Honestly, with 6-10 inches of snow, wind chill -17 degrees right now, 30 mph winds, a white-out going on---I was going to call in today, as were all the teachers I know. My car is buried by the snow and the plows, the Metropolitan Transit Authority basically stated on their webpage "If we get there, we get there, otherwise stand at the bus stop and freeze your tuchess off waiting forever". Thank goodness they just announced school is closed. It's so cold that salt will not work to melt ice, so you have everyone slip-sliding away on the sidewalk, being blown around by the wind, cars sliding through intersections, buses that can't climb hills, etc. They've closed major highways to avoid hundreds of stranded vehicles like the last blizzard. How on earth were kids and teachers supposed to get to school?
Aaaaaah. Spent most of the night up monitoring the weather and awaiting the fate of the NYC schools. Now, back to a thankfully warm bed. Plenty of folks around here have lost power according to the news, so I'm grateful.
I have a buddy at work who home brews. Me made a coffee milk stout that was pretty darn good.
I lived in southeast Michigan most of my life before moving to Maryland 4 years ago. I never even gave a moments consideration to skipping work for a little snow. I remember leaving at 4am and still being late one day with a 10 inch or so morning storm.
That’s life.
Here in Maryland, the paralyzing fear of a dusting of fresh global warming sends the populace into a staggering case of the vapors. The sissification of America is on display here.
We’ve got 4-5 inches on the ground. I got up a half hour early, cleaned my car and got to work a half hour early. All the little babies stayed home, afraid of nature.
Oh, and I did all that wearing an air cast on my left foot and driving a 5-speed.
It ain’t that bad.
But, since your school system decided to cancel, enjoy the day.
Currently in Nova Scotia on holidays visiting wife and kids, I live and work in Alberta, long story but she’s quitting to come back to Alberta soon.

The first flurries of snow had not even begun to accumulate on car fenders yesterday before government offices and schools across Louisiana began to shutter. You could hear the doors slamming and locks clicking from Bernice to Dry Prong and from Logansport to Tallulah. With Monday – and Tuesday for some – a government holiday, it was a perfect opportunity to fold everything into a four-day/five-day weekend, all courtesy of the long-suffering Louisiana taxpayers.

And what of the stores, businesses and industries that employ the taxpayers who foot the bill for all these deadheads? They’re open for business and their employees are headed to work this morning to earn a living. And pay the taxes.
And another thing. Just what the hell is a “non-essential” government employee? And if they’re not essential, why are we paying for them?
If someone in the metro Atlanta area had thought they saw a snow flake the entire city would have shut down and all the stores would be out of milk, bread and batteries.
Everybody rushes to the store and buys bread, milk, and TP. Those with generators fire them up and get fresh gas. Rednecks get their Big Mud Trucks ready to go out and look for stuck cars.
It's all harmless fun. Been happening since the early 60s to my personal knowledge.
I feel your pain. Bunch of stubborn Irish ancestry in my family.
That is just a normal day in Minnesota..
I thought you guys out in NYC where tougher than this.
Where are you located? NJ? I heard Gov. Krispy Kreme say on the news last night that all non-essential government personnel should stay home for ever.
A guy can dream right? if they are not essential they are overburden.
I just don’t like unnecessary risks I guess.
That’s a White Russian. Sometimes you see it with just cream instead of Bailey’s, but close enough.
I don't know whether to yell at you or laugh.
Put in a splash of cream and you’ve got a White Russian-Irishman.
So instead, close schools for December, January and February and have school the rest of the year.
I should be running this entire country. I tell you, things would definitely improve. I have other ideas as well.

It's so cold that salt put down has no effect and it's very very slippery to even walk down the sidewalk. No one in their right mind is driving, because cars are just sliding through intersections as they try to stop at red lights. They said it's so cold you could get frostbite on any unprotected parts in 15 minutes. The National Weather Service has just issued a thermal warning for areas just north of the city. The city itself will have wind chills of -10 degrees today, the coldest in TWENTY YEARS! I really don't expect to find mail in my mailbox. That's OK.
So thank you, I will continue to sit here in my living room, watching my cats cozy up to the radiator and getting ready for the Sabbath.
Southerners don’t really give two hoots about efficiency. If it needs to get done, it will get done. Sometime.
