December 2013 Plug-In Electric Vehicle Sales Report Card
InsideEvs ^ | 1-3-13 | Jay Cole

Chevrolet Volt: For December 2,392 Volts were sold, which was down 9.2% over December of 2012, when GM sold an impressive 2,633. (full story here)

Previously in November 1,920 Volts were sold, which was actually an increase over 2012 when just 1,519 were moved off dealer lots.

December’s result means that GM sold less extended range Chevys in 2013 than 2012. 23,094 were sold in 2013 vs 23,461 – a loss of 1.9%

To blame for the year-over-year miss is an inventory situation we first alluded to in October.

Basically, GM overbuilt 2013 model year stock in the summer, thinking they had enough inventory so they could temper 2014 production as well as also start to build out the Cadillac ELR. However, a big price reduction in the 2014 edition of the Volt (down to $34,995) made clearance deals on the 2013s very attractive to customers and has put GM in a hold on 2014 inventory they have yet to dig themselves out of.

So the Volt had a drop in year to year sales.

The reason given - Inventory problems.

Yeah....that's the ticket.

I wonder how many Volts are driving around New England in today's weather?

Also from the article, a report on the Chevy Spark:

“In October, the little Chevy electric posted a result of 66 Spark EVs sold during October, which was down some from September when 78 were sold.

However, no one should read into anything into the monthly number…at least if they are trying to get a handle on Spark EV demand, as GM basically sets their own monthly sales number by curtailing inventory. GM could sell a lot more if they wanted to.”

I see...GM is intentionally not selling these...for some reason.

And those companies that sell hybrid’s roll the electric powered distance into the overall gas mileage making it look better than it really is.

GM is still hyping the Volt while losing more money on every sale and I believe the new Cadillac (Volt) ELR will be a bigger loser for them with a $75K starting price.

If someone is and the Volt catches on fire, the driver can keep warm. :)

Bought one this past month. GM rolled out 7000 cash off for 2013 models. Roll that in with the tax credit and it makes it very affordable compared to other cars. Plus the fuel costs are low if you drive short distances. I’m doing about 120 miles per gallon if you assume fuel is $3/gal and electricity is 10 cents per KwHr. Performance isnt affected by the cold... only range.

I’m happy with my purchase. Still hate that GM suckered the feds into giving them cash for a car they were putting out anyways.

The same temperature differential has been notice by photographers shooting in place like the Antarctic. Battery amp hours go down significantly in those temperatures.

Ive notice a slight loss of am hours in 40 degree weather on my digital camera

Here’s the sales figures for the 1964 Mustang:

From Wiki:
Original sales forecasts projected less than 100,000 units for the first year.[25] This mark was surpassed in three months from rollout.[26] Another 318,000 would be sold during the model year (a record),[27] and in its first eighteen months, more than one million Mustangs were built.

2,633? Yes, that’s impressive. Impressive that it’s still being sold at all....................

What's wrong with this picture?....

The feds want me to use lightbulbs I hate to save electricity. The feds want me to use electricity to power my car. They want efficient engines but insist on lacing gasoline with corn, I guess so I'll be more tempted to waste electricity with a plug-in car.

They're not making any sense.

Obviously you’re a pariah on FR now, but I applaud your honesty. Interestingly the three Volt and one Tesla owner I know personally all love their cars.

Saw a Volt on the road for the very first time the other day. I was starting to wonder if they were another myth like affordable health care.
