F for game time in Green Bay on Sunday evening for the playoff game between the Packers and the 49ers. This is getting awfully close to the record coldest NFL game temperature of -13 deg. F, set Dec. 31, 1967 at Lambeau Field during “The Ice Bowl”, the NFL Championship game between the Packers and Dallas Cowboys. The 2nd coldest game was Jan. 10, 1982 at Riverfront Stadium during the AFC Championship game between Cincinnati Bengals and San Diego Chargers, at -9 deg. F, so Sundays game might take the #2 spot. I was at a game, ‘67 I believe, where it was -13F. We had seats in a corner of the oval about 2/3rds of the way to the top. When the crowd cheered we could not see the field due to the rising water vapor. (No, this wasn’t the “Ice Bowl”)

Even if the temperature is lower on Sunday, the ice bowl was windier AND the wiring to warm the field failed in 1967.

There is no way I would sit in the stands for that one. I’m a fan, not a (damned) fool. I once sat in 100 degree heat at Fenway. Never again, I’m not bring paid millions of dollars to be there.

This will likely be a colder game than the 1967 one because of the millions of people who will be home watching on TV.

Think about it, millions of people who would normally be outdoors will be indoors watching the game. That means a lot less body heat to warm the outside. Thus the temperature will drop further. Back in 1967, we didn't have quite so many people watching on TV. Many people were out hunting, ice-fishing, chopping firewood and things like that.

That game had sustained winds at 27 mph giving it a -38 degree wind chill.

The coldest Super Bowl, weather-wise, was played in New Orleans, LA at a gametime temperature of 39F.

It's nuts that an 8-7-1 team gets a home playoff game against a 12-4 team. But if the 49ers lose this one, the weather will be no excuse. It'll be because they weren't able to get pressure on Rodgers and he was given time to exploit their limping secondary. The 49ers defense is vulnerable - they don't substitute much and they wear down late in the season. They gave up some huge numbers in December and January last year (and made Joe Flacco rich). And they've been getting shredded the last few weeks, following last year's pattern.

But the cold will punish both teams equally, it's not like the Packers field a team of Eskimos - the players on both teams are mostly from Texas or California. And there's precedent for a 49ers win - while it happened before most of the current players were born, the last time the 49ers ventured into the Midwest in blistering cold for a playoff game they demolished Ditka's Bears 28-3 en route to their 3rd Super Bowl win.

I remember a -14 day when I was a kid and we went outside ON PURPOSE to see what it was like and play in it. Even boiled some water and threw it in the air to see what happens (instant snow) - very different than room temp water too

I watched the ice bowl on TV. I was warm.
