I have had a problem with Chinese women ever since my days travelling in Lower Manhattan (Chinatown). The crudest individuals I have ever met. And some of the worst, most dishonest storekeepers going.

I've always found that one can judge MUCH by how a society treats its women. So, it's NOT surprising that Chinese women are some of the "crudest" and "worst, most dishonest storekeepers going."

It's true for FOBs (Fresh off the Boeing) and CIAs (Chinese in America) but NOT, I believe, for ABCs--American-born Chinese. Maybe I'm wrong.

I have known and lived with Chinese people all over Asia and in the US. Amy Chua got her publishing start with her book on overseas Chinese, which is very good indeed. This is not a new theme for her at all.
In Asia you see the proof of her thesis. In places like Malaysia the Chinese dominate the useful roles in society through sheer superior competence in spite of discrimination against them. They don’t do this by being sweet, they are tough, hard, focused. Get over your annoyance. This emotional reaction to them is a losers response.

Really? That’s funny. I’ve never been cheated by a Jew in my life.

Also, those Chinese women were taught to be that way by their oh-so-sweet (NOT) mothers.

I doubt cloudmountain is a loser or is having a loser response. You like Chinese people - good for you. We’ve had other experiences. That’s what makes Free Republic a loser-free zone. We bring vastly different experiences to this site and it’s exciting to read about them. No need to put anyone down.

That’s what they say in Malaysia Indonesia and the Philippines too, those people that are too trivial to see the important things. Like why they are losing the important competitions. Ignore such trivialities and notice their strengths.

Inflections go up and down, according to the kind of Chinese one speaks but there is NO mistaking SCREAMING. There is no "screaming" inflection in any of the Han Chinese dialects.
There IS emphadsis WITHOUT screaming.

I took some basic Chinese years ago. The instructor had been in my Aerobics class and invited me to learn some Chinese. So, I did.
She was a WEALTH of information. She NEVER raised her voice in ALL her teaching and pronunciations in Mandarin or Cantonese. Screaming was NOT part of Chinese.

I love the story about the tiger mom who kept ripping up her child’s Christmas card until she made one that came up to mama’s standards. Oh, how Christian! I shudder at the thought of the sensitive kid who grows up in such a household. Another poster child for Gay America or another mass killer.

These people for the most part are first or second generation out of the crude depths of peasant culture. Some are nouveau riche and have no social polish.
But these objections are trivial. Diamonds look awful without polish but are still diamonds.

Black people from the Caribbean are some of the nicest, most attractive - and yes, successful without being horrible - people in the world.

Cantonese spoken on the street in HongKong sounds horrible, and the social norms there take getting used to. Its not the language in itself, but the way it is normally used.
Cantonese for my money is, in its typical application, one of the worlds worst sounding languages.

Chua and Rubenfeld?
What do you get when you have a traditional Chinese and a traditional Jew as parents?

Someone who avoids pork fried rice.

The Chinese have been thrown out of many places in Asia because they work so hard and make lots of money, putting the work ethic of locals to shame.
What makes them unpopular, I was told, is there unwillingness to share that wealth with any non-Chinese.

I admire Chua's work. I read all the Amy Tang books too. Loved them.

China had so many emigrants because they preferred moving to unknown places to starving to death. They brought their culture here...and sometimes despair when their own children reject the Chinese culture and WANT to be 100% American. It seems a no-win for some Chinese mothers.

I am ALLOWED, you know, to BE annoyed. Who are YOU to TELL me to get over it? You sound JUST like a Chinese mother scolding her offspring. :o)

Mahathir Mohammed, the architect of Malaysia’s anti Chinese discrimination policies, and no loser himself, finally admitted that these policies were the result of an emotional reaction against cultural difference and useless. He urged Malaysians to emulate the strengths of the Chinese.
That is my point.

Well, it was a long, long time ago—and maybe they went to those dark green areas. :)
