Who's to say those trees won't be harvested in a few years and the carbon held hostage in them set FREE?

Lol! But even so, it points out the stupidity of their argument.

Even if we accept their theory that “carbon offsets” makes any sense, it’s basically saying that it’s OK to screw things up today as long as you make it right, eventually.

It’s like stealing a car while leaving an annuity that puts $10 a month into a savings account so in 50 years the person you stole it from will have enough to go buy a replacement.

If you want to fix the earth’s carbon balance, grow fast growing trees that store carbon quickly, then chop them down and bury them — deep. Then plant more.
