Do these houses have heat, toilets, running hot and cold water, the usual kitchen appliances, Internet and phone connections, and maybe air conditioning?

Not one of those staircases would pass inspection in my county. A friend had his custom made stairs disapproved because the rails were 1/4 inch too far apart. They made him tear it out and have another one built. Very costly. Also, even though they don’t need hurricane clips, they are a requirement. No alternative building is allowed by our Gestapo inspectors. (The building department here is self financed and builders tell me they find on average $4k-6k worth of fines. Builders just figure that into the costs.)

I’m sure you have to add all of that...but it’s a cheap structure for the end user and can become an attractive space with the influx of that most important building material...cash.

Some places are worse than others. I’m thinking if you’re going to spend the money on a structure, you’d better make sure the builder KNOWS all the codes, or get another builder.

Really fun if you are a kid.

I slept in one once over night. I will never forget that funky wet cardboard smell. Doesn't do well in the rain. Lol.

Thankfully I have never had to sleep in one as an adult.

As kids, we used to make “forts” of of ‘em in vacant lots, but the rains did more damage than the “enemy” did. LOL.

I read the article to see the pics. Let me wipe my feet for a couple of ours after wading though all the gushing verbiage....

I didn’t read all the copy; the pics/configurations were what I was interested in seeing.

I would love to build a nice bug-out shelter in the hills out of these.

We used to make them out of wooden pallets at a nearby construction site. Those weren't very weather-proof...but still a lot of fun.

If the containers are cheap I can see some possible savings by having prefabricated structures in your design. However for the most part these just look like some designer was trying to make a point about how clever they are on someone else’s dime.

I slept in one during gulf war one.....built a 2x4 wall and added a air conditioner and a door, bunks and a table w benches for my EOD team and our gear. Sand bagged that puppy up with an excavator and a dozer and slept nice and easy thru the scud sirens and the one or two that hit close by....

Love those sea containers and conex’s for improvised hooches .....
