While America collectively freaks out over their impending 'polar vortex', Canada is changing the game when it comes to cold weather phenomenon as reports of 'frost quakes' emerge from around Toronto and across Ontario. Indeed, as temperatures drop overnight to around -4f around the city hundreds of people are being startled by hearing large booms - causing them to think their homes are being broken into or gunshots are being fired. In fact, they are merely hearing the after-effects of the frost quakes - or cryoseism - which are more commonly found on a glacier in the polar regions.

Never in my 67 years have I heard of anything like this.
I heard several of these last night. I did think my house was being broken into. It is =22 right now :(
=22 should be -22
Verteran ice-fishers are familiar with the phenomenon.
Yup. I love the sound.
Its especially fun when you get out on the ice with someone who doesn’t have experience on the ice.
That stands to reason. Earthquakes I know..this is a phenomenon I havent experienced yet,...but with global warming on the way its only a matter of time...
My pastor spent several years up in Alaska I’ll have to ask him what his experience with this sort of phenomenon is ..
Stay as warm as youre able!
There must be something wrong with your thermometer, global warming says it should be frost free up there by now. ;)
Stay warm and stay safe! (and when the mud months arrive, you’ll likely wish it were still freezing..)
I’d hate to be in Fargo, ND, Int’l Falls or Embarass, MN right now. They are always much colder than the cities. I think Embarass hit -47 last week.
The Gov cancelled school state-wide today (announced last Friday). I believe with wind-chill it is supposed to be near -65. Ice on all of my window interiors - even ones that don’t normally do this ( all Anderson Double pane windows).
That my friend is COLD!
I spent the first 21 years of my life in central lower Michigan but we never saw cold like that.
Im in coastal Northern CA now.. and refuse to complain about the occasional freeze.!
Clearly some writer doesn't have their news facts straight. -4 might be a little unusual in the Pittsburgh area, but we're going below that tonight and it is the forecast high tomorrow.
FWIW, I coated my car windows with dishwashing liguid last night and the ice came off real easy this morning. Hope I can do the same again tomorrow.
I’ve heard vinegar works too. BTW, I did find out that vinegar freezes somewhere in the neighborhood of 0 to -10 degrees F outside temp (albeit I found out by “accident” due to leaving a gallon of it in my garage - not really sure how cold it was in there).
Jason Lewis calls it Minnesocold, LOL!
If it isn't very cold the night before you coat, vinegar alone can run off before it does its thing as well.
I told my son about the vinegar thing, but warned him that someone may nickname his vehicle massengil if he applies it too liberally ;)

Nice website, thanks :) -24 in Theif River Falls. BRRRRR My garage was cold enough for the 20 minutes I had to be out there airing up car tires. One lost 20 pounds seemingly overnight! The cold does crazy stuff like that when it shifts downward 30 or 40 degrees overnight.
