RIP Mr. Shaw.
One of his biggest mistakes was taking a pass at signing Bruce Lee to a long term contract.
Lee eventually signed with Shaw Brothers rival : GOLDEN HARVEST and went on to make some of the biggest Kung Fu movies of all time ( all of which Bruce Lee himself had creative control ).
"Sir Run Run Shaw"
Back in the day, mid-70s Lubbock, TX, I used to go to see Kung Fu films just about every Sunday. Later, mid-80s Dallas, TX, my BFF and I would sit around on Saturday afternoon and watch Action Theater.
I’ve probably seen a hundred Shaw Brothers films. Or more. I still pull that stuff down from the shelf on a Saturday evening and sit and watch and drain a few brews. My wife is no fan, but she humors me when she sees that evil glint in my eye that says “I feel the need, the need for flying-sidekicking-backflipping-swordplaying-speedpunching Hong Kong cinema.”
Makes me feel like I’m 17 again.
RIP Mr. Shaw.
As one that saw many ‘Shaw Brothers’ movies, while in Thailand, while the fire of Bruce Lee was new, and enjoyed them all, I shall remember him well.
