dictionaries ad nauseam | 9 January 2014 | Thursday's sub

Posted on 01/09/2014 4:44:07 AM PST by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

co·mi·ty\ˈkä-mə-tē, ˈkō-\, noun
1. a: friendly social atmosphere : social harmony
b : a loose widespread community based on common social institutions
c : comity of nations
d : the informal and voluntary recognition by courts of one jurisdiction of the laws and judicial decisions of another
2. : avoidance of proselytizing members of another religious denomination

Example sentence:
When asked by a fundraiser attendee about civility in the Senate, Coburn reportedly said: “There’s no comity with Harry Reid. I think he’s an absolute asshole.”
—Erin Durkin, NY Daily News, October 28, 2013

Etymology:
Latin comitat-, comitas, from comis courteous, probably from Old Latin cosmis, from com- + -smis (akin to Sanskrit smayate he smiles). First Known Use: 1543

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Did you really just miss the opportunity to use “comedy of errors?”

It is 48 and foggy here-how nice after the cold-

The key to finding comity
Among the diverse factions
May embrace who lies least
Among the best attractions

What a mess we created by
Allowing untruth to slide
Under the broader radar beam
Of what a candidate would hide

He runneth best who lieth best,
I misquote and paraphrase-
We need a truthstorm to happen
To wash out this phony maze...

Christie is having a presser right now, and he sounded really confrontational defending his innocence over that traffic scandal some of his staff supposedly caused to happen, playing hard ball mob style mob politics. That crap might be okay up there in mafia country, but it is not acceptable to hicks like me in flyover country. I don’t buy that he is “heartbroken”, or any similar thing, and he is basting his political goose, but good I think...

I guess he went for the changeup where I would have pounded the parallel home. (comity of Eros/comedy of errors)

A+ for you. I am not sold on Christie. I don’t trust grown men who display obvious fanboy tendencies IYKWIMAITYD.

Thank you! I don’t trust him either-too self centered-I was working on a bid and didn’t see much of it, but I heard I don’t know and as far as I know expressed so many times that he needs clippers for that hedge. Not confidence inspiring, but I don’t like eastern mob types, so I may be a bit biased...

Because you aren’t seeing the game here.

Fcol.

They closed a couple lanes on the GWB for FOUR days,

So, allow me to provide the political context.

In the current Climate, we have a President, that blamed Bush, for 5 years, then Boner and Congress.

Then the OCare rollout. No heads rolled.

He comes out, takes absolute responsibility, fires his Deputy Chief of staff, than tells his chief campaign strategist to “withdraw” from higher positions (for the Non Chess players, he’s too important to leave NJ)

He’s now the Anti Obama.....it’s a gambit. And it was brilliantly played.

Nope, not buying-haven’t we had enough clever guys with mob type ethics and connections in the WH? Hell, we have one now-this is supposed to be a free country, not a mafia controlled city or a banana republic...

I’m sure Christie is a hell of a lawyer-I’d love to have him represent me, but it doesn’t mean he should be in the WH.

“Because you aren’t seeing the game here.”

Excuse me for adding my unsolicited dos centavos-but that was precisely what I was saying-most of us don’t live “there”, so this just resembles a non-violent episode of the Sopranos. While it might be okay with people who live where that is accepted, I find it rude, juvenile and unprofessional, and I doubt I’m alone-it certainly isn’t an attitude or MO that belongs in the WH-again...

No, the Sopranos game, is being played by the DNC, because there is no path to the WH for a Dem, without NJ.

The mayor of the City in question, a Dem, has resigned, and is lawyered up to avoid being subpoenaed n this investigation.

Here’s exactly how this played out. He requested the roadwork, (reported already) and a bunch of politicians sniggled over the result)

So, he comes out, plays the AntiObama, fires one person, and basically tells his chief campaign strategist, he’s staying in NJ.

That’s all this is about.

TheDems tried to manufacture an issue, and got outplayed.

Why would anyone with a brain want Hillary-what you really get is Bill for a 3d term. The glass is half full to me-I do not see the only choices as Hillary and The Fatboy-having that better-settle-for-who-we-say mindset put forth by the GOP-E is what gave us two guaranteed losers like McCain and Romney-I’m not the only one who is committed to a real candidate who supports smaller government and makes the nannies sit down and STFU this time, and Christie does not even come close.

Your mouth needs soap, tiger-corruption is sport in all political arenas, but our brand of corruption does not involve major organized crime as a way of life-I’ll take my state-home of my family for 240 years-over yours any day...
