My wife is still concerned about emergencies and cell outages. The cell outages don't happen often but the land line is nearly 100% and it's hard to think of something that's more reliable.

Most of what we get on the land line is spam (we're do not call too), service providers, and a few relatives now and again.

I could live without it.

We visited friends over Thanksgiving; they'd just moved to Peoria, Arizona - a booming northern suburb about 30 miles north of Phoenix.

Zero cell service at this time, so their carrier sent them some sort of gizmo which equates to a mini-cell tower; problem is, though, that their setup was difficult and only their gear worked in the house....our cell and tablet were worthless there.

VoIP is good provided you have power to your cable modem. We have a Verizon network extender in our home. It’s basically a mini-cell tower.

For that you need cable and power, but it works great.
