But the problem is that they BELIEVE they are morally superior.
Anytime people create their own moral standard, rather than submitting to the absolute standard set by God, they invariably judge themselves worthy. Since their standard is subjective, they can take one moral position when it justifies them, and later shamelessly take the opposite side of the same moral argument when better suits their interests, e.g. When you lie to me, it is wrong. But when I lie to you, it is justified.
Outside of God’s absolute standard, people do not judge themselves guilty. When the Third Reich came crashing down Hitler believed the German people HAD FAILED HIM, not the converse.
So when Obama or Clinton lie, cheat, steal, defraud their neighbor, bear false witness, accuse the brethren, etc., they continue to flaunt airs of moral superiority, and honestly (sic) believe they are the offended party.
