Florida Panthers seeking public funds to offset losses of $20 million
CBS Sports ^ | January 10. 2014 | Chris Peters

The Florida Panthers claim they are losing $20 million to $30 million a year while operating out of Broward County's Sunrise, Fla., based BB&T Center. In order to offset those costs, the team hopes to rework its contract with the county in order to collect $70 million in tourism tax revenue to cover the costs the Panthers are paying on their arena.

I am not sure how this will fly with So FL tax payers as they got hosed by the Miami Marlins. If a business can't make it it should move.

Why should taxpayers subsidize them or anyone else?

You are a business, make your own money

Fully concur. Billionaire in Edmonton, Alberta wants tax money for a new arena for his hockey team, and we fork out so he can make all the money. Wish I could do that.

That's all - $20 Mil? Chump change.
Buffalo Bills owner and multi-millionaire Ralph Wilson has extorted $400 million from NY State taxpayers over the last 10-12 years.
And as a sign of gratitude, the MFer named the stadium after himself, then scheduled one home game a year to be played in Toronto.

Why report?

We know who will pay.

I’m a New England hockey fan.

It starts with three year olds on ponds, and builds from there.

Why the f*** would anybody who lives in South Florida have a shred of interest in ice hockey?

Kind of sounds like posturing at this point. This team was just purchased by a new owner earlier this year. I think that the major problem with the team is that the local TV and Radio revenue is well below average and that is probably the difference. The team draws pretty well when they are competitive and with all the transplants down here they come close to sellouts when old teams from the north visit.

The arena itself is really top notch and the parking is excellent too (if you drive a Lexus you get free parking, not really sure why). And across the street is Sawgrass Mills with all its’ shopping and restaurants.

The south Florida market is tough on sports teams and owners. They are really fair weather fans down here, as anyone who tuned in a Dolphins game this year on the television could see (20,000 empty seats even when they started 3-0). The Heat are a special example as any team sells out when they are the best attraction in the world at what they do.

I think this is just the opening salvo in a potential move (the Seattle fan above is right that there is real interest there and there’s been talk of Quebec City getting their team back as well as a second team in the Toronto area, so there are options).

Maybe they should lower their ticket prices. When Tampa can’t fill seats you can get nosebleeds for $13. nosebleeds were $50 the last time I checked for the Panthers.

They should move to an area that gives a %$#@ about ice hockey.

Because there are a lot of people who used to live in New England living there?

Yeah, but we’re talking about attracting hockey fans, not Real Housewives of whatever lame-ass county the Panthers play in.
