The arbitrator reduced his suspension from 211 to 162 games. For a guy making $20M+/yr, a 49 game reduction in his suspension represents a substantial chunk of change.

A-Rod still has the option of taking his case to federal court, but judges rarely overrule arbitrators in such cases.

Most contracts end up having some sort of arbitration clause. This could get tied up for years.

He might never play BBall again, I doubt it will come to that, but he is near the end of his career.

I'm wondering if the Yankees won't take the position of "Look we hired you for X number of years, not X-1. If you can't play X number of years because of you own misconduct, you've breached the contact. Hit the pike; we don't owe you anything."

That's a reasonable approach to take, but I imagine his defense would be, "If I were suspended for 10 games you would keep me. If I were suspended for 50 games you would keep me. This is only a matter of degree, so you should keep me if it's just a bit longer than that." The team would have to have a stronger argument, such as "you brought dishonor upon the organization."

He won’t get paid for suspension, but my understanding is the Yankees have no way to get out of the contract. What I read is the lawyers tried to, but they can’t.

Without pay: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/arbitrator-rules-alex-rodriguez-should-be-suspended-for-2014-season-for-ped-use-164637215.html

As a rule, major league (NFL, NHL, NBA) suspensions are without pay, but otherwise the contract remains in force, in other words, he is not a free agent, cannot play in Japan or whatever, during that period.

Then they should retire Ichiro as well. He’s 41.

Good riddance.

Too bad the Rangers can’t recover all that money they continued to pay him while he was playing in New York.

Tigers fan here. I could care less.

Jhonny Peralta and Prince are gone and the current replacemnt (Iglesias) is athletic enough. Miggy can carry the team ONLY as required but, his production should be dropping off soon.

If this team doesn’t get to the WS in 2014, they are “done” for a term and will need to make a rebuild effort.

My thoughts? No WS 2014 and an outside shot at a WS in the coming 10 years depending on internal development and Lehmann’s situation; Jim L ain’t no Sparky but he might pull off a good run at the playoffs before he gets fired.

(NOTE TO MANGEMENT: Don’t throw away ^real^ talent!).

Tigers and “The Playoffs” in 2014 aren’t a viable consideration, IMHO.

Another nail in the coffin of the man who would save baseball from the likes of Barry Bonds.

so much for him challenging Barry Bonds all time home run record.

Then again, who knows if fans would be excited to watch a suspected user challenge the record of another suspected user. Baseball statistics are just not going to be as important to fans as they once were.

He’ll be picked up by some team that usually picks up washed-up has-been players. He may not improve the win/loss record, but he will draw box office.

I would say that his usage of performance enhancing drugs is the breach of contract.

The Yanks thought they were getting a baseball legend, chasing 700 homeruns, who would attract fans.

What they have if he were to return to play out the duration of his contract is damaged goods due to his own behavior which was against the rules.

Unfortunate. The Yankees just got a reprieve from a massively stupid contract.

and it’s going to be hard to out bid them for tanaka now.

Leyland stepped down at the end of the season. Brad Ausmus is the new manager.

That’s probably true, but they don’t have to play him. And it sounds like he would be fine with that.

Good to see A-Rod’s sorry ass out for 2014, sad to see the Yankees escape the consequences of their stupid contract. And on what grounds did the arbitrator decide to reduce baseball’s initial 211 game suspension?

You mean like Bonds? Not.
