Johnston was advancing on the officer with a knife. That’s pretty much the point of no return.

But, that being said, the guy wasn’t being violent to anyone, he was contained within an empty house. Why couldn’t the officer have waited outside for backup to bring a taser or a shotgun with beanbag rounds?

Who knows if the guy didn't have a gun or knife hidden somewhere on his person.
He was unpredictable. Sane people do NOT walk towards ANYONE with a weapon. WHAT did that moron expect???
