Happy New Year and welcome to the 60 Minutes/ Vanity Fair poll for January 2014. This month's poll centers on sports in America. What is it about America's fascination with sports? The word fan is short for fanatic, and some people think that sports in our society might be changing from a national pastime to a national obsession. The revenue that sports generates has fueled a large rise in 24/7 media attention and coverage, and with that comes the inevitable excesses and scandals that are all too familiar. But sports also builds bridges and is a big part of America's cultural DNA. Over 100 million people from all walks of life gathered together to watch the Super Bowl on CBS last year. That one I don’t get at all and never will. Sorry about a temp derailment there.
I've seen tapes of countries on the brink of war over a SOCCER game.
Sports are controlled war. Humans are competitive and winning events brings home the prize...and enlarges national/provincial/whatever pride. Hero worship is alive and well. Guys can't come home from war as victors...so they bring home trophies, ribbons, money prizes, whatever.
NOTHING has changed in human behavior--men always played some sort of war games...to prepare to protect the cave, so to speak.
And women control the men, if said women are smart.
Soccer hooliganism is still rampant throughout Europe.
40,000+ vuvuzelas could make me riot.......
It is DIRECTLY proportional to the amount of booze that is ingested, it seems. Go figure.
You’d be surprised, that it really isn’t as alcohol-induced as you might think.
Hooligans literally get a rush out from the fighting. They even pre-arrange fights with rival firms.
What do you bet that said hooligans have a dad in prison.
Sons will end up there too.
Let's hope they don't breed first.
