I always wonder what the cops would do if the dog owner were to calmly say, "That's alright officer. I understand. Uhhh, will you excuse me for a moment? I'd like to step inside and let my wife know. I'll be right back ..."
Because I'm thinking a lot of guys would step inside with other plans.
