Wi-Fi vs. Ethernet: Has wireless killed wired?
DIGITAL TRENDS ^ | 13 JANUARY 2013 | MATT SMITH

As home networks have increased in popularity, so has the wireless router. The rise of Wi-Fi has also caused the downfall of wired networks (in homes, at least), and many consumers now see Ethernet cords as being rather old-fashioned – that is, if they see them at all. Some newer computer models, like Apple’s MacBook Air, don’t even have ports for Ethernet connections anymore.

The blistering connection speeds offered by today’s Wi-Fi standards do make wired networks appear a bit of a relic, but appearances can sometimes be deceiving. Though Wi-Fi has improved significantly over the last five years, it is not perfect. So is there still a place for Ethernet in the home?

“I have 2 phones, 2 tablets,2 laptops, and a printer running off a 20 mps broadband WiFi . They all work fine through my home from a Uverse gateway. The only problem device was a Sony Blue-ray player which I had to hard wire.”

Whatever floats your boat. However, you should consider the security issue.

Arris router modems do not work with Linux laptops. We had a new modem installed, it’s so much faster.... if you have Windows. I could connect if I had about 20 ft of Cat 5 ethernet cable though.

I have actually given my neighbor our wifi password to help his daughter out with downloading a file for school. His network wasn’t working and it was the weekend. Hooked him up and he downloaded the file in a flash through my house walls, across the yard between us and his house wall.

He had the cable company out the next day for the whole day, but none the less, got him taken care of for the day.

Wireless (well actually our in-house Router) gets turned off every night....use it for ROKU, and sometimes laptop when “unhooked”. Have a love/hate relationship with wireless.

Access points can be secured so that 'thieving neighbors' can't access your internet connection. Not only WPA, but most routers can restrict access to a list of trusted MAC addresses.

The NSA can get around that, but script kiddies and most others can't. The ones that can, have jobs and pay for their own internet access.

No network, wired or wireless is 100% secure. If you are doing something that sensitive, it should be on a computer not connected to a network at all.

Before too long you’ll be running your, HVAC, lights, window blinds, home security, Refrigerator, washing machine, dishwasher, toaster and more, all wireless.

Soo much for the guys that were wiring “Smart homes”.

“You really think that’s more secure?”

Absolutely it is more secure. It keeps the thieving neighbors from getting internet access on my dime. In addition, it keeps people ( AND Big Brother ), from cruising the streets looking for open networks. They might find open networks but not at this house.

Also, I have never seen a wireless network that is as fast as a wired network. They cannot be compared speed-wise.

I've got a couple of 100 footers around. And a box of Cat 5 and a bag of connectors you could borrow if you were closer. ;)

I did not say that wired is 100% secure but what I do know is that it is MORE secure than wireless.

I have only one computer on the internet. The others are isolated. ;-)

I have a keypad for my house door lock. I have looked into the wireless lock... it intrigues me. And the ability to turn lights off and on by logging into a site.

Absolutely wired is more secure if even from the thieving neighbors.

I only have one neighbor close enough to maybe barely be within range of my wireless, and she's a rich, single mom... born again Christian. I'm not too worried about it.

They need more Channels, at least until the 5 GHz band makes more headway.

When everyone in the area is on Channel 6, it causes problems.

If you look at ADT “pulse”, it is a start.

I think there are more advanced systems out there.

The key, from what I understand, is a type of RFID chip.

True this. Read a story somewhere about how offices being designed today are done so with wireless as the primary connection method. Thousands of feet of wiring, labor involved in the wiring, physical engineering considerations to route the wiring.....poof. All gone. Wireless networks replace them all at a fraction of the cost.

I connect via cell signal and WiFi via cell signal and my service and capacity are only getting better. I live in a semi-rural area around DFW and my speeds have increased about 50% in the last year.

All my stuff is on 5 GHz. I had leftover equipment from when I ran a wireless ISP.

Most new blu ray players have wireless capability built in now.
