Language changes; I feel sorry for the people of Effingham, Illinois.
I grew up in southwestern Illinois, about thirty miles from that town, and when I was recently driving back through the area, I entered the name into Google Maps; it was rendered “effing ham.”
I lived there for several years. Funny thing is I never considered the name being funny until I heard someone who had never heard of it laugh at it when I told them where I was from.
