Word For The Day, Monday,1/27/14
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
casuistic; adj.
1. pertaining to casuists or casuistry. 2. oversubtle; intellectually dishonest; sophistical: casuistic distinctions. Also, cas·u·is·ti·cal.
Etymology: casuist 1609, "one who studies and resolves cases of conscience," from Fr. casuiste, from L. casus (see case (1)). Often in a sinister or contemptuous sense. Casuistry is first attested 1725. McCormick, urged a more historical approach to natural law, and with it a new appreciation of and fresh ways of approaching the principle of double effect, casuistic reasoning, and weighing various goods and ends in practical matters. The controversies of post-conciliar theology by Hinze, Bradford E. / National Catholic Reporter For many observers the whole unseemly farce that evening in Munich had been stage-managed, written and directed by casuistic promoter Frank Warren, who would match flailing frogs for a fight if some idiot would buy a ticket. If this was a soap the writer would be committed! by Birmingham Mail (England)

My kids would not tell you that they were restricted in any way. They made these choices willingly. xsteen did not WANT to drink and carry on. i remember telling her, when she would just marvel at kids drinking and getting in trouble, that it wasn’t even a matter of maturity, that there were plenty of adults who couldn’t wait for it to be 5 oclock or the weekend, so they could start partying. It was not something she ever wanted to do.
If it is as widespread as you say, then I don’t see how legalizing it will change anything. If the market is saturated with users, it is saturated. The only thing that changes is that we collect taxes instead of spending tax money.
Probably like any other parent. It would depend upon her age and the severity of the infraction. Grounding, removal of privleges (phone, etc.) I imagine.
Not to be pedantic, but the word you are looking for, is respect.
Fear, is, by necessity an element of respect, which becomes ....tempered over time by understanding.
Just this reporters opinion.
Under threat of military school?
Are you sure you didn't "nudge" them a bit?
xsfiance had wild oats and he sowed them. he was ROTC as were his friends. xsteen has made it a point of telling him, which he understands quite well, that overindulging was not something that she would countenance. They will have wine with dinner, but that’s pretty much it as far as their alcohol consumption.
the threat was never verbalized. there wasn’t a single incident that required that the threat be made. if you live your live as a model for them and let them know what you expect of them, is that nudging/threatening?
Our daughter also saved herself for a special guy - and he is. It is more important to continue to teach your children the dangers in life, rather than believe that being too controlling will push them the other way. You taught them as toddlers, why would you stop just because they are teenagers?
We really didn’t drink when the kids were little. Now that 2 of the 3 are legal, they will have a beer or glass of wine at our christmas party, as do we. Our kids have never seen us drunk—bc we have not been. Literally the first year of law school was the last time i was! and there were two instances in my 57 years, period. you know, bc i have told you, we don’t have hard liquor in the house, bc we don’t drink it. and the refrigerator in the garage is still full of the beer and wine left over from our christmas party.
You said above that xsboy knew the threat.
No, modeling behavior is not a nudge.
Tuesday night when I watch TV
I’ll be tuning in a station
Not airing the latest musings
Of Obama’s fevered imagination
I can see no reason to listen
To more of his casuistic tales
Right on the heels of Obamacare
And several other epic fails
Though he is a lame duck now
He refuses to see or believe
The falling number of people
He is able to charm and deceive...
maybe xshub jokingly mentioned Fork U, or talked about it in relation to other kids from their school who had gotten in trouble. xsboy never did anything that warranted a threat.
Of course. But part of that is understanding that young adults are not toddlers.
So you look at legalizing pot as victimless and a way to tax people.
and i believe that the dangers that you warn them of when they are toddlers are things like not drinking the bleach from under the sink etc. i believe whyisa’s point is that you continue to warn them of the dangers that are inherent at each stage of life.
i would not watch SOTU even were a gun pointed at my head! A++++
But don’t we all have guidelines and consequences for our children at various ages? Time out as toddlers - witholding a toy or invitation from a friend as they get older - no trip to the mall or taking away the car as they get older? I think knowing a major screw up in high school would put your butt into military school is a valid consequence.
I won’t watch him either - he disgusts me
Fallon was on a 2 hour program on that subject a few years ago-I think it was on the science channel, and I was indeed fascinated with the findings.
