On March 29, 1971, The Godfather, considered by many to be one of the greatest films ever made, began principal photography in New York City.

Because the film is a period piece,The Godfather actually presents a fascinating record of what 1940s-era New York City locations still existed in the early-1970s. Sadly, many of them are now gone. What still remains? Let’s take a closer look.

Thanks for posting this..fascinating stuff..I've bookmaked the website for later viewing..as one born and raised in NYC in the 50's..it's a time travel experience.

FWI..the house in Hollywood when the horse's head sequence was filmed is on the market for about $115 mill, or available to rent a $600K per WEEK.

And the newsstand scene..where they see in the paper that the Don's been shot..in NYC in 1946..there were about TWENTY daily papers..some morning, some afternoon, some evening..and some, like the Daily News..published FOUR different editions each day..

I was ten when Sputnik was launched ( 1957) and I went out and bought EVERY paper the next day..it was 14...I still have them all..

Thank you for posting this. I also read that the wedding party was actually a party. They had real wine, food, and music and invited hundreds of people used as extras. They filmed the exterior shots as the party went on. Also, they took great care with the cars in the film. Since the first half of the movie takes place in 1946, all of the cars has to be pre-1941 models as Detroit stopped making cars during WW II, and the models they filmed were accurate.

The additional hit locations are too obscure to identify, though maybe this barber shop will ring a bell for someone out there?

I'm sure someone will keep an eye out for it.

Thanks for the post.

As I watched this yesterday for the hundredth time, I was taking in a lot of the scenery surrounding the action.

Many of the scenes a I took particular notice of are highlighted in this.

Very cool

Interesting. Somewhere along the line, I believe shooting took place at Lake Tahoe, California at a lakeside mansion called “Fleur Du Lac”. Somewhere, maybe in Godfather II they talk about moving to Lake Tahoe and of course there’s lots of scenes of the lake in Godfather II. But I always thought the opening scenes of Godfather I were in Fleur Du Lac which, if not, has a lot of resemblance to the Staten Island Mansion.
