Once was one of the coolest gadgets on CSI, but now one New Mexico police department has it. The Roswell Police Department has recently acquired a Faro 3D scanner which will be utilized in major accidents and crime scenes.
The 3D scanner utilizes a laser which "captures" information. Once the information is downloaded into the computer, the software creates a 3D image, which essentially allows officers to "fly" through scenes, said Roswell Police Detective Scott Stevenson.
All police have to do is turn the scanner on, put in the distance they want to scan and technology does the rest. After the scans are finished, they upload the data to their computers and then a 3-D panoramic picture appears. The 3D scanned crime scene will allow investigators to study a crime scene from multiple angles.

Roswell... no doubt the original site of the technology transfer that made this all possible.
We’ve had them for a while in Florida.
now what will be important is where/what view they scan the scene from. Because things will still block things behind whatever view they scan it from.

Wait until the professional plaintiff’s witnesses get ahold of this tech. The damages from their fraudulent “accident reconstructions” will be enormous.
It seems like any fatal traffic accidents get used as training opportunities. At least in the DFW area, they tie up major interstates for eight hours or more. May take longer while the cops fiddle fart with this new technology. What does a measuring wheel, a piece of paper and a pencil cost by comparison?
I went to the manufacturers website, looks like it can be used at crime scenes too.
I noticed on the video that there were some blank areas in the model.
It looks like it should only take a few minutes to scan an area, they seem to take hours with the measuring tape.
