Family Of Italian Tourist Killed On Venice Boardwalk Files Claim Against City Of Los Angeles

CLAREMONT (CBSLA.com) — The family of an Italian tourist struck and killed by a car on the Venice boardwalk last summer filed a claim Monday against the city of Los Angeles – the first step toward a civil lawsuit.

Alice Gruppioni was just 32 years old when she married Christian Casadei last summer. She was struck and killed by a car on the Venice boardwalk during their honeymoon just a few days later.

In a Skype interview, Casadei said, “we want to start our life in the place that we love.”

The family of Gruppioni has not specified monetary damages in their claim against the city, but the family’s Southern California attorney says they hope to resolve the matter out of court.

“We are not practicing hate here. We are not looking for revenge. We just try to have justice,” Gruppioni’s aunt, Katia Gruppioni, said.

Nathan Campbell, 38, has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge and 16 counts of assault with a deadly weapon after prosecutors say he drove his car into a crowd, injuring 17 people, on Aug. 3, 2013.

Police say more than 10 cars accidentally drive down the boardwalk daily.

The LA City Attorney’s Office declined to comment on the pending case.

Limousines, movie stars.... “We just try to have justice. To us, justice looks like 32M Euro.”

“Police say more than 10 cars accidentally drive down the boardwalk daily.”????

Not that this will do the couple any good...but I’d steer clear of the neighborhood entirely

10 a day and nobody dies — except for one criminal act.

Sounds pretty darn safe to me.

Not quite the same way that the Nicholas Green case went.

This would be very ironic if the deceased was from Venice, Italy.

I guess they can’t sue the evil moron who drove into them, so the taxpayers get the bill. I would be satisfied to see the guy hang and be done with it.

This shows negligence on part of the city, because it's unlikely that ten drivers per day are all high on drugs, or homicidal. It is far more likely that the street layout and signage are inadequate. The city should have placed some bollards at the entry point.

Not so fast. Ever heard of Special Order 40? It essentially makes Los Angeles a “sanctuary city.” While you may be right about greed, LA deserves a few lawsuits to bring it to its senses—if that is possible.

Public entities in California are not liable for common law negligence.

In order for the taxpayers to be screwed by greedy plaintiffs, the slimy plaintiff lawyers have to establish liability based upon the government code. If a property is safe when used with due care (as the Boardwalk clearly is) — then there should be no raid upon the taxpayers.

unfortunately, the judges in California are too pusillanimous to throw these lawsuits out, and the juries are too gullible to smell the BS.

If they wanted justice they would go after the driver, what they want is a payday so they go after the deep pockets of the city.

Why LA? Isn’t Venice it’s own city?

A city that is apparently OK with 10 cars driving on the boardwalk every day...I don’t know if they will win, but I know that the city is, without a doubt, somewhat responsible for this woman’s death.
