1-3/4 inches of White "Global Warming" Shuts Down Atlanta's Hartsfield Airport
WSB Talk Radio | 28 January 2014 | RACookPE1978

Posted on 01/28/2014 2:49:47 PM PST by Robert A Cook PE

The (light) snow started about 11:00 AM, schools were shutdown at 1:00, but nobody down can drive in anything white. People are taking 3-4 hours to get from downtown to even the expressway around Atlanta I-285.

One baby was delivered on the side of Loop 285 - parents couldn't get to the hospital.

Atlanta's Hartsfield Airport had a "ground stop" from about 15:00 (3:00 pm) to 17:30. It's now just lifted, but the planes aren't taking off yet. That will plug all arriving flights for many more hours.

Blah.

Very large number of school buses are still on the road - Still stuck at the bottom of hills they can't get up, or blocked at intersections because the rest of the traffic can't get through the same plugged intersections. They may stop at other schools and stay overnight.

I was in Nashville once, when they got about an inch and a half. I was terrified driving around! People had no clue how to drive in even that light a snowfall! No one had all-weather or winter tires, they were sliding around like crazy!

1 3/4 inches? Seriously people, that’s nothing. A dusting of snow and the town shuts down. We have a special name for that much snow up here in Michigan. We call it “late October”.

2 to 3 inches here west of Dahlonega.
Still falling but slowing.
Reports roads are hazardous, and 400 a mess
from I285 north.
I’ve got plenty of propane and three dogs so
I’m warm as toast. Glad I got my tank filled
two weeks ago as now the suppliers are limiting
deliveries and the price has gone up.
Got a 30 lb bottle last week for $20 now $25.

We are good in north Fulton county.... So far only 3 inches but local and state government were caught flat footed .... No sand or salt trucks... The school districts panicked and called school off late... Then suspended bus service because it was too dangerous to drive.... Thousands of kids are be stuck at school to shelter in place.... Real mess,,,, roads are solid ice

I wonder if the 2014 Global Warming summit has been postponed for reasons unknown.

It’s a lot down South. Most smaller cities don’t have salt trucks or plows. The snow is usually very wet and sticks to the tires. The more you drive the bigger and stickier it gets. We don’t get enough of it down here to invest in snow tires or snow plows. An inch of snow cripples us back in the hills. Most of the time, as soon as it starts the schools let out and businesses close down. Two inches of snow and we are ordered off the roads by the local law enforcement.

3" here, 3/4 hour NW from Atlanta in Cherokee County. Looks like it has stopped.

We get snow about once or twice about this time of year. Since it comes so infrequently, there are few sanding trucks or supplies and few know how to handle it well and almost no-one has snow tires.

So it is best for folks here to stay off the roads unless it is an emergency.

As for Global Warming, I hear they are trying to scare us with Global Cooling again. Some are trying a Chicken Little Scare both ways called Global (GloBULL) Climate Change.

Don’t worry despite the bitter winter we are having by this time next year 2014 will be declared “the warmest year on record”. Does ANYONE believe this BS anymore?

The other difference is that the roads are usually warm and wet when the snow starts. That leaves a layer of glare ice which requires chains or studded tires to drive on safely.

Part of the problem is lack of snow driving experience or equipment, but a significant part is the ice.

BTW, I’m a Georgia boy, but have lived in the Chicago suburbs and have no problem on driving on snow up North.

Mrs BN & I cancelled dinner out tonight. It was in the 30’s today before the snow started here in NC, so the roads were wet. It is 19 now and getting colder. Ice rink time on our country roads!

Stay warm, people!

I am in the Florida Panhandle. The temperature has been right at 32 degrees for a couple of hours. Sometimes a bit below and sometimes a bit above but basically 32. Very light rain all day.

I looked out earlier and noticed nearly all bare trees covered with ice. I have lived in cold climates and no matter where you live, tree limbs covered with ice are a real problem.
