When I was in elementary school (back when Grover Cleveland was president), it was standard protocol to take a can or two of soup or pasta hot dish to school with your name on it just in case of stuff like this. We did this every November and took them home every April.

Teachers not only could hug you, but they could also smack you on the backside if needed.

I was taught by nuns. Hugging was allowed but smacking was expected. I still can picture the size of the paddle. For minor infractions, a ruler was enough.
