Flat Sales of Wii U Put Nintendo in the Hot Seat

TOKYO — Nintendo said on Wednesday that poor sales of the Wii U game console had caused a big drop in revenue in the first nine months of its financial year, adding pressure on the company to execute a strategic turnaround.

Nintendo has resisted the advance of the smartphone, an increasingly popular platform for video game players, refusing to license popular games like the Mario franchise for mobile use. Instead, it has stuck to console systems, seeking to integrate its own hardware with video game software.

I watch Netflix on my Wii all the time. No problems.

The sad part is Nintendo owns the rights to several franchises that would be AWSOME on a console with the power of an XBOX one or PS4. Punch out comes to mind, Zelda, Smash Brothers, or Metroid could be extraordinary on a machine with the power of the other consoles and I believe would attract old and young alike.

Makes you wonder how long until Nintendo will be bought out.

Nintendo doesn’t lose money. You are correct! I plan to get a Wii U for the family this month.

Wii was awesome. That was why it kicked the other two consoles buts for what 3 years after it first came out.

We were using my daughters Playstation 3 for Netflix (due to the lack of good games for it), but now that she has gone to college, the Wii is filling the gap.

Wii is awesome - the family uses it several times a week. I enjoy the fun games, mario series, etc.

Problem with Wii U is "what is the compelling reason to upgrade from the Wii?"

I kept hearing about "U" but never really understood why I should abandon the original Wii for the newer platform.

Meh. My gaming preferences are generally more PC, but for party/groups, a console is a better system. So I’m not too current on much of the console market.

That being said, The main console I’m planning on buying here soon when I get off my lazy butt and get one, is an N64. Some of the best games of all time are those from that time, and the newer stuff they have, from what I’ve seen, doesn’t have the same quality and playability of new titles. Sure, the Wii bowling/sports was cool and new, but there’s no awesome titles like Zelda, Starfox, DonkeyKong, etc. And most of the Mario series are just ‘updated’ graphics on Mario party.

(So if anyone’s selling a 64 for cheap, feel free to let me know!)
