MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -

A Rutherford County elementary school teacher faces animal cruelty charges for shooting her neighbor's cat.

Katherine Duke, a fourth grade teacher at Wilson Elementary School in Murfreesboro, admitted to police she shot the cat Thursday afternoon because she was tired of it using her children's sandbox as a litter box.

The cat's owner rushed it to a veterinarian where the animal had to be euthanized.

Duke, 41, was charged with animal cruelty and booked into the Rutherford County.

She has since been released on a $2,250 bond and is scheduled to appear in court March 4.

I'm going to speculate here. Hey! It's what we do.

I suspect an irresponsible pet owner who had been told more than once. Perhaps a better course of action was to obtain a restraining order.

What did she shoot it with? The article doesn’t state. My guess a pellet gun not a 12ga.

I was thinking of that. As far as I know, Tenn. does not have small claims court. So I guess her recourse would have been to lawyer up and sue for damages.

I love my catz. But I don't let them wander the outside and get into other people's property and cause damage.

I have a neighbor that WILL kill cats on his property.

I thought digging down into the sand and finding cat crap was a rite of passage for all kids growing up.

I'm a responsible dog owner. I'm a long time trainer and handler. I always know where my dogs are and always make sure they are contained and on my own property.

I follow the laws. I hate cat owners who think I have to put up with their cats on my property. If I wanted a cat here I would have one. The only thing this person did wrong is that they should have killed the cat where it was, bagged it, tossed it in the garbage, and never said a word.

Difficult to fault the shooter. There was a cat which kept tipping over our trash. Let’s just say there was a cessation of the offense. .22 shorts are almost inaudible.

Uncle Fred used to kill cats on his property. They were feral. He said he killed at least 35. His garden was amazing!

I’ve done that and I fail to see something worthy of arrest of a human.

It was a terrible outrages thing to do. And I have to say to those that think this is OK, please speak for yourselves, it`s not true that Conservatives do not like animals, but some seem to assume that this is the case.

Mark Levin and myself, and millions of Conservatives do not believe its OK to shoot a cat for being a cat, makes no difference what the owner does or does not do

Not aimed at anybody in particular

I have 2 cats and a new kitten but I can’t say I lay all the blame on the teacher. Letting your cats out to poop all over the neighborhood is a bad idea, unsafe and very inconsiderate! Sure, it’s different for farm cats or field cats, but no one wants to find cat crap in their kid’s sandbox! I do wonder if the cat owner was spoken to before it came to this. I’m very sad for the cat tho, just doing what comes naturally.
