MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -

A Rutherford County elementary school teacher faces animal cruelty charges for shooting her neighbor's cat.

Katherine Duke, a fourth grade teacher at Wilson Elementary School in Murfreesboro, admitted to police she shot the cat Thursday afternoon because she was tired of it using her children's sandbox as a litter box.

The cat's owner rushed it to a veterinarian where the animal had to be euthanized.

Duke, 41, was charged with animal cruelty and booked into the Rutherford County.

She has since been released on a $2,250 bond and is scheduled to appear in court March 4.

A responsible Mom has a cover over a sandbox when the kid’s not using, under supervision, anyway.

No way do you get to say that she was not a responsible Mom. She was trying to keep the cat crap out of her children's sand box. It was the irresponsible cat owners who are to blame here. Cat owners, just like dog owners, should keep their pets at home. Period.

HEY, YO!! TEACH,

You are only being prosecuted persecuted, because you VIOLATED THE 3S PRINCIPLE.

Also, you really effed up by not making sure the damn thing was permanently greased.

Katz lovers are deranged. They think their little kitty can go ANYWHERE and do ANYTHING they want to other people's property, ANYTIME.

And don't you dare complain!

Recommendation for defense: I was "protecting my property" from destruction and vandalism.

Put the damn KATZ owner on the hot tin roof for a change.

throwing cat sh!t on the neighbors porch/door/house/car would be much less liable to get you tossed in jail...

I have cats and I have a sand box. The sand box is covered. Neither the feral cats nor my cats have ever used it as a potty.

the teacher never mentioned that the cat was causing a problem.

If your cat is out and about you can bet that it is on other peoples property where it does not belong. That is a pretty simple assumption. I keep my dogs at home and secured at all times. That is my responsibility as a pet owner. I can not say I do not have this responsibility just because no one has told me my unsecured dogs are causing them a problem.

I do not want to hear the crap about cats just being cats. If you chose to have a python as a pet it has to be contained so it doesn't go next door and act like a "python." There is no difference. If you have a pet it is your responsibility to restrain and contain it so it does not violate other peoples property or rights.

I agree with you.

I love dogs, but only had them when I lived in the country. Somehow I can never get over people walking their dog over to your lawn so they can pee on it, as is routinely done here in the ‘burbs.

The solution was out of proportion to the problem. It certainly wasn’t the model of Christian kindness.

What is FR—the global site for cat murderers?

Animals cannot be murdered, for murder only applies to humans, as we bear the image of God — to claim otherwise is to demean mankind.

I don’t agree, but you’re welcome to your belief.

Oh? What definition do you use then?
And why is it different from the rest of humanity's?

Wikipedia:

Murder is the unlawful killing, with malice aforethought, of another human, and generally this premeditated state of mind distinguishes murder from other forms of unlawful homicide (such as manslaughter). A person who commits murder is called a murderer.
Dictionary.com:
murder
noun
  1. Law. the killing of another human being under conditions specifically covered in law. In the U.S., special statutory definitions include murder committed with malice aforethought, characterized by deliberation or premeditation or occurring during the commission of another serious crime, as robbery or arson (first-degree murder) and murder by intent but without deliberation or premeditation (second-degree murder)
  2. Slang. something extremely difficult or perilous: That final exam was murder!
  3. a group or flock of crows.
    verb (used with object)
  4. Law. to kill by an act constituting murder.
  5. to kill or slaughter inhumanly or barbarously.
  6. to spoil or mar by bad performance, representation, pronunciation, etc.: The tenor murdered the aria.

So I’m expected to cover my sandbox which is on my property in order to keep the neighbors cat out of it.

bullets are easier, keep your cat under control and mind your own damn business

I agree. I’d never kill someone’s pet over something like that. All it would take to remedy is a few dollars for some wire to cover the sandbox (preferably paid by the cat’s owner, but if not, I’d pay for it). Cats come through my yard all the time and don’t cause problems. They may use my garden sometimes, but I’ve never noticed (and at least what they deposit is underground).

At times I’ve had a more serious problem with dogs using my front yard (especially large ones). Still, I wouldn’t kill a pet over that.

That is very well said. People who call pets their babies creep me out.

The most shocking thing here is that the shooter went to jail and had to post bail. I don’t know enough to judge the case, but shooting an animal on your property that is there against your wishes should not result in an arrest and a criminal charge of the resident. At most it should be a civil issue.

And what an ugly image “we” have when we kill pets because of easily remedied nuisances. I’d say that kind of conduct demeans mankind.

Cats, dogs, birds, raccoons, skunks, squirrels, deer and all other animals are ANIMALS and carry diseases, fleas, ticks and such like. Why would a mother not cover and protect her children’s sandbox from contamination? A lot of sandboxes come with covers. Don’t depend on your neighbors to protect your kids. They are too precious and irreplacable.

Mark Levin and myself, and millions of Conservatives do not believe its OK to shoot a cat for being a cat, makes no difference what the owner does or does not do You have every right to think what you want but not a single right to impose your cat on me. We live out in the country and people are always dumping cats off out here. No problem for me at all. What I don't get the coyotes and bobcats do. Which way is better for these beloved and deserted kittys?

You just need the right recipes...
