Now she’s at a minimum-security prison in Florida, sentenced to 20 years. Her mother, Minnie Pearl Thomas, who had two previous drug convictions, received two life sentences with the possibility for parole after 40 years.

Smith could have gotten a lighter sentence by testifying against her mother, but she refused.

Life in prison with 40-year parole, for DRUG DEALING? Those are murder sentences. Ridiculous.

Actually, you get less time for murder. During my first divorce, my lawyer spent a lot of time with me going over the time you could get for murder.

For some reason.

There was an article posted on FR a couple of weeks ago about countries with strict drug laws. There are a few Asian countries (Malaysia and Singapore come to mind) that have mandatory executions for drug dealers.

As you might expect, these countries don't have a problem with narcotics.

I suspect the multiple prior offenses had a lot to do with these sentences.

I deplore these “cute” snarky comments about others — I thought we were supposed to be above all that.

This is a heart-warming story. Ghetto kid grows up straight, gets scholarship to Georgia Tech and goes on to become a superstar in the NFL? Playing for a SuperBowl ring at age 26?

And his uncle, the Baptist minister, does not get credit for raising this fine young man?

I hope he has a breakout day Sunday!

Incredible!

Where are our values? Where are our morals? Where is our understanding of what makes a good and just society?

Isn’t the story in the paper about the grandmother rooting from her prison cell?

Why is it the republican leadership is so gung-ho to grant amnesty to foreigners who have and who continue to break our laws, but insist on full-blown punishment for American citizens? I say, if republicans forgive the ongoing crimes of millions of foreign lawbreakers, the prisons should be emptied of citizen lawbreakers.

The REAL story is how, despite being dealt a terrible hand, Thomas prospered to the point of playing in the SuperBowl.

The sub-story is his aunt and uncle taking him in and raising him to be a productive citizen.

The fact that his mother and grandmother are in prison for drug dealing is incidental, IMHO.

After a couple of years behind bars, she will regret that decision.

she has been there since 1999... her mother should have insisted that her daughter turn state evidence against her...

You win the thread prize for best post.

Bigbiz have bankrolled the campaigns of these Republican/Democrat sellouts with $ and votes to keep those borders open...And government gains an easily controlled uneducated population which has no problem with handouts/socialism.

They’ll do anything to save their low wage labor golden goose...

Profits and power regardless of consequences...

They don’t give a sh*t about Americans...

My thoughts exactly. We have draconian punishments for non-violent crimes. The IRS is persecuting conservatives while Dinesh D'Souza is arrested with bond set at $500,000.00 and anyone suggesting that the word 'marriage' refers to a very special and unique bond between a man and a woman is somehow evil. We live in such a strange upside-down world. You're right - there are plenty of people deserving of amnesty long before we get to illegal aliens... and yes, the phrase "illegal alien" is also taboo.

I agree with you and just shows you what the media values drugs and stories about people who use drugs.
Now contrast that with the article I read today about the Obama admin looking for candidates who were incarcerated for drugs and wanting to commute their sentences or something like that. I feel like the media is using this narrative to push for Obamas wants IMO.

Agreed! The kid was dealt a bad hand and instead of using that as an excuse to go down the same path, he chose to be positive and make something of himself.

They should have been sentenced to prison just for naming him Demaryius.

Thomas was also the player who caught the pass from Tim Tebow that shocked the Steelers in the 2012 AFC wild card game.
