Word For The Day, Thursday, February 6, 2014 – neologize
dictionaries ad nauseam | 6 February 2014 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

neologize \ nee-OL-uh-jahyz \ , verb
1. to make or use new words or create new meanings for existing words.
2. to devise or accept new religious doctrines.

Example sentences:
Scientists at Northwestern University, inspired by the faux pundit’s ability to neologize, created a set of nouns for “Colbertian,” which they could use to test the effects of bilingualism.
-- Amina Khan, “Bilingualism: Stephen Colbert's 'truthiness' inspires a language,” The Los Angeles Times, 2012

In the meanwhile, necessity obliges us to neologize.
-- Thomas Jefferson, “To John Waldo,” 1813, Jefferson: Political Writings , 1999

Etymology:
Neologize joins the Greek neo meaning "new" with a variant on –logy , a combining form derived from the Greek logos meaning "word, speech, discourse, reason." This verb entered English in the early 1800s.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

So this intervention by the government is good but not to prevent pot being smoked everywhere?

The very thought of Wendy having a gun near her hand makes me want to take cover...

Why would a statue-or a real guy-standing out in the freezing weather in skivvies make any woman think of assault, sexual or otherwise? Ridiculous...

everyone would be startled, ONCE, and then you know it’s a statue and it becomes part of the landscape.

How many neologisms will be spawned from #SochiProblems?

When I go out to eat at even the little bar and restaurant out here, I’m offended by people who bring kids with them-even the well-behaved ones are messy and they won’t stay in their chairs-they whine, too-they annoy me, and I should not have to put up with them. I’m also offended by fat people sitting within my sight-they are disgusting in their overeating, and destroy my appetite-I should not have to be exposed to them. Non-drinkers look at my glass of wine/beer with disapproval-they offend me and ruin my dining experience.

I have no wish to offend my FRiends, but frankly, since we are all wanting only those like us around in even private businesses, let’s have separate sections for each group-smoking, non-smoking, kids, no kids, fat, not fat, alcohol, no alcohol, and the list goes on...

Too many of us are only too happy when a nanny rule suits us-the way I see that is not freedom for everyone-how happy will you be when the sign says no gum chewers, no fat people, no whatever it is that YOU do or enjoy?

Sorry to be such a spoilsport-rant off...

When did I say that pot should be smoked inside where tobacco is prohibited?

We could devote a day to stuff that annoys us. That would set a record for posts. Instead, I'm going to do the opposite. Tell me something that makes you happy.

P.S. I get your point.

I saw a good one on the internets, it went like this:

Putin is better than Obama, and Romney is better than Putin at doing an Olympics, hence the voters really screwed up in 2012.
