dictionaries ad nauseam | 6 February 2014 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

neologize \ nee-OL-uh-jahyz \ , verb
1. to make or use new words or create new meanings for existing words.
2. to devise or accept new religious doctrines.

Example sentences:
Scientists at Northwestern University, inspired by the faux pundit’s ability to neologize, created a set of nouns for “Colbertian,” which they could use to test the effects of bilingualism.
-- Amina Khan, “Bilingualism: Stephen Colbert's 'truthiness' inspires a language,” The Los Angeles Times, 2012

In the meanwhile, necessity obliges us to neologize.
-- Thomas Jefferson, “To John Waldo,” 1813, Jefferson: Political Writings , 1999

Etymology:
Neologize joins the Greek neo meaning "new" with a variant on –logy , a combining form derived from the Greek logos meaning "word, speech, discourse, reason." This verb entered English in the early 1800s.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Had to call opposing counsel to ask if she objects to our filing an extension of time for filing our brief. She sounded literally to be 12 yo!

Did you ask her to put her mommy on the phone?

When my wife worked in the pharmacy, her boss sounded like a teeny airhead. But was a pharmacist.

Having a place to stay that is at least moderately warm, fresh food to eat, and my pets near me on this cold day makes me happy-I’m grateful for all of God’s blessings.

When I was pregnant and picking names-for both sexes-I was picking girl’s names that were either trendy or foufou. My mom told me to name the kid something that made sense and wasn’t cutesy, or she would not be taken seriously and it would hinder her professional success...
