February 3, 2014

One Anne Arundel County, Md., police officer devastated a family on Saturday when he shot and killed their dog while investigating a burglary in the Pasadena area, reported Monday's Baltimore Sun.

On Saturday afternoon, the deceased dog's guardian, Tim Reeves, was alerted to the presence of an officer in his front yard by his girlfriend.

He went to the door to see what the problem was; Reeves told the Baltimore Sun:

I said to him 'How can I help you, officer?

He looked at me and said 'I unloaded on your dog. Your dog attacked me, and I killed it.'"

The one year veteran of the force killed "Vern," a Chesapeake Bay retriever, who barked at the intruder who had entered his yard.

According to Vern's guardians, the officer was walking through yards in the neighborhood, hoping to interview someone about the burglary; Vern's guardians were not involved in the burglary investigation.

“...nothing can’t be made worse by involving the police.”

Cops ARE NOT your friends. How much you want to bet that this “one year veteran” was wearing fatigues and combat gear? Some cops are at war against law-abiding citizens. Aren’t they supposed to work for us?

I said to him 'How can I help you, officer?

He looked at me and said 'I unloaded on your dog. Your dog attacked me, and I killed it.'"

There it is in a nutshell. In the course of 'investigating' a crime, the officer entered private property, a dog barked at him, and he shot the dog. Think about this; using this excuse, someone selling girl scout cookies could enter your yard, have a dog bark at them, and then kill the dog, and it is perfectly okay. After all, officers have set the barrier to using deadly force at a bark. They don't have to have any search warrant, hot pursuit, etc to do it either, simply enter your yard and claim that they were 'investigating for witnesses.'

A comforting thought to go to sleep with.

you don’t think there are people somewhere in the country that wouldn’t do it for shooting their dog?

Haven't found any yet. How may people want to face a murder conviction over a dog?

This speaks volumes about the officer's outlook on his own bravado.

Virtually all of them think that way

I’m so sick of this crap! A burglary means the thief is not at the scene. Why is he walking around in peoples’ yards at night. Too bad someone didn’t unload on the damn cop.

What’s chilling is all the jackboot lickers who think this is perfectly okay.

I’ve never heard of a mailman killing a dog.

Jonty30, maybe a neighbor could sue for the cop putty the neighbor in jeopardy by firing a round in the dark.

Not true. There is a different standard for crimes committed by law enforcement. The can do almost anything and get away with it. Crimes that would get us ordinary serfs landed uder the jail get cops a commendation

The people are going to have to get elected to office in these towns and be in charge of hiring the police chief. And explain to the new chief that he’d best be training his officers to jump on top of the car instead of shooting dogs.

If it’s a county deputy the sheriff needs to be made aware that he can be voted out.

These moron cops are out of control. They need to be taught how to do their jobs.

I had a state trooper get smart with me once while he was looking for a reason to give me a ticket. I hadn’t been out of the military long so I still had driver’s license from the state of my last duty station. He wrote me a ticket for having an out of state driver’s license. He didn’t know the law gave me a year to get a new license.

The next day I called the governor’s office and complained to someone. About two hours later the head of the state police called me, apologized and promised that cop was finished. He said I wasn’t the first complaint on the guy. Oh, and the ticket was dropped.

How did this brilliant cop know who owned the dog? I guess he deduced it.

Back around 1980 I lived in Virginia Beach. I was issued pepper spray which was 1/10 of one percent pepper. It was not intended back then for use against criminals but in case we had to deal with a bad dog. That is probably about 100 times weaker than is commonly used today tho we did not know about scoville heat units.

I always kept a few cans around. One Saturday I walked out to a nearby strip mall for a newspaper. I had only gone a few feet before spotting a mean looking doberman. I went back in and got a can of spray. The dog did not bother me probably because I was wary of him.

I got the paper and while walking back home was absorbed at skimming over the paper but just caught a motion out of the corner of my eye. The doberman was heading right for me and he looked mean. I waited until he was only a couple of feet away and hit him with the spray. It stopped him like he had been pole axed. He began scraping the grass trying to get the stuff out of his eyes etc.

If that weak stuff was that effective, the extremely strong stuff the cops carry would stop a dog like a brick wall.

Why don’t they use the spray instead of shooting them? Maybe because they are told and trained that they can.

i didn’t ask if you personally found any. reread the question.

And I didn't answer about my person experience - reread the answer. Back your big talk with an example of where someone shot a cop for killing their dog.
