Arrested woman refused to pay $1000 cab ride from JFK to Mass.

A pretty blonde woman got off a flight from Brazil at JFK Airport, hailed a yellow cab to her Massachusetts home — and then stiffed the driver on the almost $1000 fare, called him a moron, and threatened to call President Obama on the cops who arrested her. Denise Rebelato, 31, took the cab Wednesday afternoon after driver Adnun Chaudhury quoted a $980 price when she asked for the over 200-mile trip to Framingham. She told him to take the I-95N, then claimed she hadn’t and berated him as a “moron,” he told the Post.

As a former cabbie, anyone who lets a fare rack up this big of a tab is a moron. In my day, if the destination was out of town, we were required to drive into the garage and change our clunker cab in to a nice cab. While we were doing so, the fare would go to the office and pay in advance for all except the last $20 or so. We would call in the mileage and meter charges when we got to the destination and told what additional money to collect or refund.

The policy had been instituted when a cabbie was murdered by a fare some years earlier. Not fun in the days before cell phones. But when we got a radio call to contact the office on a landline, we knew it was a possibility.

I live approx. 65 miles from Kumamoto Airport here in Japan . Local taxi charges a fixed rate of $ 100 ( and there is no tipping here ) one way . So times 3 would cost $ 300 . Japanese / Tokyo taxis ( rates are more or less the same nationwide ) are typically twice as expensive than NYC taxis . So where does this guy get off asking $ 980 for a 200 mile fare ???
