Same reason Dom Perignon is more valuable than Koolaid. There are lots of people willing to go extreme lengths to have the former, which is relatively rare / difficult to come by, while the latter is ubiquitous, but not particular desireable.

An individual 17 was once an adult. I don’t know if that’s the case today statutorily.

No adult should be involved with a minor. Period.

In rural America for a very long time teen marriages were pretty damned common with 17-19 year old boy and 14-16 year old girls
And they behaved a damn site better than average kid today and assumed a helluva lot more responsibility.... than even average 30 year college educated upper middle class girl or boy now

I kinda feel sorry for her. Emotionally immature no doubt. A very young age, worked relatively hard to get where she was. I went to her blog (listed at the end of the news story). A very young girl indeed. Probably out on her own for the first time in the big bad world.
I kinda think, these young teachers need to start out at lower grade levels. Say elementary school to not only learn how to teach, but to get years logged in before having to deal with High school students. Chances are, if she were in her 30s, she wouldn’t being pulling this crap.
She ruined her life, and for what? Too bad, all the way around. This is what happens without a good moral upbringing. Well, she can now teach math to her fellow prisoners.

My experience was not having an intimate relationship with an individual less than 17 as an individual of 17+. At 18, a sixteen year old seemed off-limits to me in numerous ways. That’s respect in my opinion.

You must be referring to statutory rape. Proximity of age should mitigate the consequences.
I don’t normally propose punitive consequences given the individual’s right to a fair hearing/trial. And I haven’t proposed a sentence for this 24 year old teacher.
Yes, she was in the position of authority, so the onus is on her, even though there was only a 7 year age difference, and they seemed equals in other ways. Same with boss-employee, doctor-patient, clergy person-parishioner, prison guard-inmate, and other types of inappropriate or unprofessional sexual relationships. People are human, and they will happen, but there are supposed to be boundaries.
I find myself saying the same thing oftener and oftener, but mainly because of fear for the future. But the present isn’t so great, either.

We have to think of the other students and staff in these situations. Is a teacher like this really able to be fair with grading, etc. And the gossip likely to be going on has to have a negative effect on the learning environment. Teacher-teacher affairs can have a negative enough impact, esp. if one or both is married to other people.
But, no, it’s not a hanging offense!
